Just like in the Republican poll, my favorite Democrat, Grover Cleveland, isn't on there!
Compass: Right: 9.94, Libertarian: -5.84
Catholic Libertarian. Gov't has no authority, all authority is from God. God grants us free will, gov't should not infringe upon it. Legislating morality is wrong. Only exception is protecting rights to life, liberty, and property. Abortion is killing an infant, one of the few things gov't should prevent. Pro-Trump, he's been an effective weapon against real enemies of freedom: The Left, but I wish he were more for free trade, more against deficits. Unrestrained capitalism is a great thing; it does wonders for standards of living of everyone, especially the poor.

Our country had capable leaders who projected stability in difficult times from 1933 to 1969. Whatever you thought of FDR, Truman, Eisenhower, JFK or LBJ, you can't doubt that they at least appeared to be reassuring figures overall. That era began with FDR who shepherded the nation through the Great Depression, essentially established the modern American state and led us through most of WWII.

Personally, overall, I'd rank George Washington and Abraham Lincoln higher, but among the President with a D next to their name, FDR was the best.

Well yeah, if you're president for THIRTEEN BLOODY YEARS, I guess it would be quite difficult NOT to eventually get out of recession. The really embarrasing thing is that he really needed all of that time, even after it was already three years in.

Ignoring the entirely false claim of him causing a recovery from the Depression (effects of which were still felt into the late 1940's and early 1950's) he also used the IRS to harass political opponents, tried to rig the courts and in the process bullied them into granting more or less total approval to his very unconstitutional programs, massively expanded government powers, spied on domestic groups, taxed constitutional rights, refused to sign an anti-lynching bill because it would have harmed him politically, set up race based concentration camps. The list goes on and on, but I guess authoritarianism is only bad when the other party does it.

Trump checks every one of those boxes plus trashed the economy and sicced the military on peaceful protesters after hiding in the White House basement and turning off all the lights and 35-40% still think his shit don't stink. And he's got what, bone spurs. Please.

We're not going to control the pandemic!

It is a slaughter and not just a political dispute.

Trump quite objectively does not check every one of those boxes lol. He sucks but he's not smart enough to be as authoritarian as FDR.

And the only thing reassuring about FDR was his lust for powerful and authoritarian impulses

Of course Cleveland wouldn't be on the greatest Republican President poll. Why would he be on it?

Bear Stearns wrote:Jackson, followed Polk and Kennedy

Polk is obscenely underrated.

I disagree — he seems like an intelligent man who chooses to play an idiot. I think his failure as President results from his immaturity, his laziness, and his lack of interest in the responsibilities that being President entails.

It's a little of a tossup between:
  • JFK,
  • LBJ (increased civil rights; on the other hand Vietnam) &
  • Obama.
