Greatest Democratic President of All Time

Postby Stellonia » Mon Jun 08, 2020 6:56 pm

This thread is based on the one about the greatest Republican President of all time. Since I am allowed only ten poll options and there have been fourteen Democratic presidents thus far, I choose to omit Van Buren, Pierce, Buchanan, Cleveland, and Carter (one of the spots went to "Other"), seeing as these five are ranked in the bottom half of presidents, while the other nine are ranked in the top half.

Van Buren had the best facial hair out of the Democratic Presidents.

Obama was the only one in my lifetime so far, so he's obviously the best. Other than him, I like FDR as well.

FDR, recovered from the Great Depression, led national effort to win global war on two fronts, promoted the United Nations, won election four times. Four. 1 - 2 - 3 - 4. Take a suck of that, Republicans. otoh a lousy husband and martini mixer (he reversed the proportions of gin and vermouth. ick). Oh and he fucking had polio.

Almost certainly FDR.

Apart from Vietnam, Johnson and Kennedy were both good.

Clinton had his moments, and Obama was largely successful even with the GOP becoming more and more unreasonable as his tenure went on.

FDR, out of those, was the best; American Presidents, however, have not set a very high bar in terms of... anything, really.

FDR transformed America from a poverty-stricken, Third World, neoliberal shithole in the throes of a debilitating Great Depression into an industrialized, First World nation with a well-regulated, mixed economy, defeated Japan, and cemented the nation's superpower status, setting the stage for a confrontation with the USSR that it would later win. FDR Made America Great Again.

Surprisingly difficult question, I never realised how little I rate Democratic Presidents until now.

I would have to say either Truman or Kennedy.

I was tempted to say FDR, but his internment of Japanese Americans is a line in the sand I won't cross, anyone before FDR is just nope, LBJ was awful, Carter was (a very decent human but) not a very good President, Clinton and Obama have good qualities but nothing that's likely to go down in history (Obama's skin colour notwithstanding).

Ignoring the entirely false claim of him causing a recovery from the Depression (effects of which were still felt into the late 1940's and early 1950's) he also used the IRS to harass political opponents, tried to rig the courts and in the process bullied them into granting more or less total approval to his very unconstitutional programs, massively expanded government powers, spied on domestic groups, taxed constitutional rights, refused to sign an anti-lynching bill because it would have harmed him politically, set up race based concentration camps. The list goes on and on, but I guess authoritarianism is only bad when the other party does it.

It was either him or the only Catholic of the bunch, Kennedy. Obama is too soon to tell.

Kennedy is a hard choice simply because of the assination. You dont know what he would have turned out to be.

It’s got to be FDR for establishing our social security net and Bringing us out of the Great Depression, and Obama for Medicare and brining us out of the 2008 crash. Only problem with saying either of them was the Japanese-Internment Camps and FDR ignoring the rule of law on occasions, and the fact that Obama is just so current it’s hard to tell. But I guess they’re better than the others.

That would set a nice precedent later on for Clinton and maybe even Trump (though Trump's was allegedly before his time in office).

I'm glad most of the responses weren't "Obama was the best ever," because while I know Trump has lowered the bar all the way down to the devil, Obama wasn't exactly my cup of tea.

FDR for how he handled the Depression and the War, LBJ for civil rights and Van Buren for that boss-level hairdo.

Edit: By the way, Wilson was trash and deserves nothing.

Conserative Morality wrote:"It's not time yet" is a tactic used by reactionaries in every era. "It's not time for democracy, it's not time for capitalism, it's not time for emancipation." Of course it's not time. It's never time, not on its own. You make it time. If you're under fire in the no-man's land of WW1, you start digging a foxhole even if the ideal time would be when you *aren't* being bombarded, because once you wait for it to be 'time', other situations will need your attention, assuming you survive that long. If the fields aren't furrowed, plow them. If the iron is not hot, make it so. If society is not ready, change it.
