Kasich hates Trump, and is a signal to wavering GOP voters that its acceptable to support an opponent when your own team is fighting for someone like Trump.

As someone already pointed out, you had Lieberman do the same thing for McCain, Bloomberg was sort of that person for Hillary back in '16. It is the "Hey, the other guy is so bad, even this high profile Republican/Democrat would rather vote for us."
