It's basically all photo-ops stuff since he doesn't actually care about stopping the coronavirus. His best hope is for media outlets to say "Trump is wearing a mask! He deserves all the credit now!" while also hoping voters don't see through all the photo-ops stuff.

He’s recently said that the situation will get worse before it gets better. Now will his base listen?

Doubtful, if anything most of his hardcore devotees will think he betrayed them for the "evil liberal agenda"

They'll probably still vote for him though. However, I doubt this gains him many votes from people who weren't going to vote for him already.
