I never bought into the whole "GOP will die due to changing demographics" thing. The Republicans will try to win those demographics instead, it’s common sense. Why would you continue pursuing a failing policy position when you can pursue a more successful one?

Because of the lack of evidence that they are willing to do any such thing? This isn't sudden, Republican strategists have been sounding the alarm for years about the need to reach out to ever growing groups of minority voters...and the response of the party has consistently been to double down on white grievance, and rely on high turnout by getting their base foaming at the mouth about America being swept away in a tide of brown and all good white Christians being enslaved and oppressed.

Eventually sure, they'll have no choice, but at the moment it seems they're not willing to try it until after it becomes completely impossible to win on the 'enraged white geriatric' vote.

Just because they don't wave it around as much doesn't mean they don't try to win over minorities.

Nah, they just undercut the ones who do like with Bush Jr.

If only they spent as much time and energy reaching out to minorities with something other than saying "The Democrats don't do anything for you" over and over again as they do in overtly reaching out to the racist and homophobic voters.

Actually, no. Among black voters since '88, Bob Dole was the best performing with 12% in '96, while Bush the Younger polled 35% among hispanic voters in 2000 and 44% in '04.

Probably wouldn't be wise for Biden to pick someone from Cali as VP, let alone someone in a district with a partisan index of D+37, one of the most Democratic in the nation.

Aye, but let's not forget that Bass is probably the best choice in terms of a black VP: she has exceptional leadership skills I hear, she leads an important caucus, she proposed the new police reforms that just passed the House tonight, she doesn't have the controversy of a law enforcement background, and she's a Progressive. Ultimately, Biden must find the person he views as the best, but Bass wouldn't be bad despite the lack in name recognition and her coming from a blue area.

I'm sure Trump has to recognize that all the primary-era debate of Dems not wanting to indict Trump "to start a vicious cycle" would go right out the window if he indicted Clinton or Obama.

The Atlantic: Trump Is Struggling to Run Against a White Guy

This is a super weird byproduct of the current political climate but it seems like the early supporters of Biden were right in identifying Biden as Trump's kryptonite candidate.

It is weird but Trump's Kryptonite is, well, another old white man, as much as we don't want to say that.

Indeed: the playbook Republicans use has pretty much been torn up. It doesn't help either that they can't advertise/market Biden's gaffes, which people have tend not to care about. That won't mean they'll keep using it though in hopes that repetition will eventually convince people that the falsehoods are true. But at this point, they're trying to make up things as they go along as they pointed to Ingram's "macchiato Marxists", which a Macchiato is a drink and I have no fucking clue what she's getting at here. They're desperate and they're doubling down on Trump's base, which is a big gamble given they can't win an election with just his base. Unless they keep Biden Supporters home, Trump is in big trouble though the only thing that could save him is his approval on the economy, which currently stands above 50%. Biden has been around the block for 50 years: he knows how to navigate these political waters, especially when they get rough: he adapts. This point sums it up:

Their bet on Biden as the candidate best positioned to neutralize Trump’s white identity politics appears to be paying off for the moment. Politico reported on Monday that the president is “surprisingly hesitant to engage his opponent—at least by Trump standards—and some advisers think he’s struggling with how to take him on.” It is not just that Trump’s supporters find Biden less threatening because he is a white man; the president himself feels that way. The notion of a Biden presidency simply does not provoke the visceral rage that Clinton and Obama did—not in Trump, and not in his supporters.

As for Biden's VP, the nation's reckoning on race looms large over final month of Biden's running mate search. Reportedly, the top contenders are Harris, Demings, Bottoms, and Warren, showing that colored women are a majority of those options. Other contenders include Rice, Bass, Baldwin, and Duckworth. There's also growing pressure to pick a woman of color, and to announce the pick before August. However, Biden has stated he wants someone that has run for office, been tested on the national stage, and is a strong governing partner. But it remains fluid and evolving:

From scrutinizing cases that Harris prosecuted in California to examining complaints made against Demings as police chief in Orlando, to combing through the op-eds and scholarly writings of Rice and Warren, the teams of lawyers are still learning about the backgrounds of the potential candidates.

The pandemic has changed at least some aspects of the vetting, with much of the research and conversations done virtually, rather than by lawyers taking trips across the country to dig into each chapter in the lives of prospective running mates. But the objective is the same: Searching for anything embarrassing, distracting or that could otherwise cause a problem for Biden, who has said he will choose someone who is ready to be president from day one.

"Every stone is being turned over, just not necessarily in person," a person close to the process said.

They are also doing focus groups on lesser known candidates to see the reaction they get.

A poll out of Virginia's 5th district shows Republican Bob Good leading Dr Cameron Webb only 43-41. I say there is serious potential for an upset here in the fall.

There is a also chance Good might have to run as a write candidate due to not filing paperwork properly
