I can't get past that sour milk taste in Hershey's. I know it's like one of America's most popular chocolate brands but it's just not for me. I'm a bit of a snob with chocolate. Quality over quantity.

We are so fortunate to have chocolate for people of all socioeconomic class now. It used to be exclusively reserved for royalty alone. Imagine never ever seeing chocolate in your life then one day you get invited/kidnapped to some elite party and there is where you get to taste it for the first time.

The older I get the more I prefer dark chocolate. Milk choc just doesn't taste as good as it used to.

Absolutely. Mayan warriors and higher ups were the only ones allowed to consume chocolate (unsweet) mixed with chilies for thousands of years. The Spaniards and other European royalties kept it secret from the public for more than a century.

So much chocolate to choose from, but I’d have to say Reese’s. There’s just something about it I can keep returning to :)

Other than that, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Switzerland make good chocolate!

My favorite brand right now is Roshen, but the thing is that often their pieces are rather small, so I particularly like those long Roshen chocolates (Such as milk chocolate bars with cookies or other filling. I also buy chocolate only when my family sends me after it, so I don't get to taste it often. From other chocolates I like Milka, Kalev, Karl Fazer, Pergale, and Laima.

So there was an actual conspiracy in order to keep the very knowledge of chocolate existing from the lower classes? How deliciously malevolent!

This explains a good deal on why many royals died a violent death at the hands of the people.

I imagine they knew it existed, but there were restrictions. Oddly enough, especially on women. The Aztecs and Mayans perceived chocolate as so intoxicating, they forbade women and children from consuming it.

In the UK, it was also apparently once illegal for women to consume chocolate on public transportation.

Yeah. It's what makes them special. They use sour milk to make it taste different from any other chocolate, but I don't like it. Other brands aren't too bad, but still a little too sweet. I'll take just about any European style chocolate over domestic brands.

Dark is great, but I find anything past 70% dark to be too bitter.

Not sour milk - butyric acid. Same stuff that's in parmesan cheese.

I'm lactose intoleramt so I can't have milk chocolate without feeling awfully sick. So I prefer semisweet dark for that rreason.

I've tried completely unsweeted, 100% cacao chocolate before. That was absolutely disgusting. Had to melt it down and add sugar to it.

I'm not sure if anything past 70% can even be considered a snack food. I've only ever seen people use the really dark stuff as a health supplement or an ingredient in something else.

No, it's sold as eating, as opposed to baking, chocolate. I just don't like it that concentrated.

I'm the same. If I'm eating dark chocolate, I wouldn't have more than 65-70%.

It’s just too bitter

I remember I once made the mistake of buying up a whole fridge worth of 80-100 percent cocoa. It was a very very bad call and it took a long time to clear.
