I've taken a few doctor-given IQ tests in my life (in childhood, early teen years and at the end of HS), and I scored pretty differently on all of them. To me, it's not so much an indicator of my own aptitude or even lack thereof in some capacities, but rather as a general marker of how well I can take a stressful test.

I think IQ tests are flawed overall, and anyone who brags about their IQ is overcompensating, plain and simple. I'm far from a genius, but I'm smart enough to not give a damn about IQ either.

My psychiatrist had me take an IQ test quite a few years ago.

I can't recall the exact figure, and he died recently so I don't know where to start to get those records, but I recall it had two sections to it. Each of them had a result, and from those an average was taken. One was linguistics, the other was logical/mathematical. I think I had around 125 for the former and 135 for the latter, which he used to support his suspicion that I had ADD. No idea how that's supposed to work, but further tests (like an EEG) apparently confirmed it.

I think it's commonly used to measure a current state of aptitude for academic fields, which is influenced by someone's inherent intelligence as well as their acquired intelligence and a host of other factors, explaining why IQ scores are subject to change throughout ones lifetime.

It might be good to get a proper IQ test, just to learn a little bit more about how your mind works. Like any psychological test, the results should be taken with a grain of salt. Like all information you need to interpret it properly.

I've thought about trying to get my iq tested and to see if I was below average but google wouldn't tell me who can provide tests in my area.

But the school psychiatrists considered me "emotionally immature" because I didn't ever find the need to talk to other people unless being directly spoken to or when I wasn't doing tasks in class activities, so I got held back a year regardless of the score.

It is impossible to measure a "general intelligence factor" to any statistically or psychologically meaningful degree (not to mention that it's by no means proven that such a thing even exists). So IQ tests are pretty much worthless.

As for the poll: I took one when I was about 5, but I can't remember what I got and my IQ definitely isn't the same now as it was then. On principle, I don't plan on taking one at any point in the future.

My speculation is that you underperform relative to what your IQ would predict, and this suggests that you have a learning disability that is inhibiting your performance. I think I read somewhere that some younger children are administered IQ tests in order to determine whether they have a learning disability; if their IQ is higher than their standardized test performance would suggest, they may have some learning disability.

Well I'm glad I was diagnosed when I did. I struggled hard for three years in university and once I got my meds it was a breeze in comparison. Probably would have dropped out otherwise.
