Never said it was good that they’re looting, though. And no, where the pandemic is concerned, no, it won’t be good. Probably quite a few of the protesters will come down with the virus.

That second part is not what you said.

Rojava Free State wrote:Apparently wheel chair lady can walk. She isn't even disabled

And even if it was, the extent of her disability is not relevant unless the claim of paralysis was used to garner sympathy points in her telling of events, and it still would not suggest she "isn't even disabled" or have been appropriate to jump to that original conclusion.

You'll forgive me if, as someone who does need a cane on bad days, I do not want this woman's nonsense and the reactions to it to have the side effect of helping continue to invalidate people whose legs aren't completely immobilized or don't have to have a cane 24/7 and label them not reeeeeally disabled. Bad enough someone who is jabbing people with a knife getting sprayed with a fire extinguisher is probably going to be played up as a sob story deemed worthy of canceling out all the valid anger and frustration that has gone unaddressed, was supported by years of inaction, and burst out sideways. Which is a hell of a lot more understandable than, say, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Vancouver_Stanley_Cup_riot ever was.

All that said, I am sorry for any local businesses that may have gotten trashed, and while I hate the idea of their having to work at all right now or face the alternative of starvation/eviction in the midst of a pandemic, I do worry about the jobs people might have needed to get them through it being taken out. But I'm also not gonna cluck my tongue and tell people to sit down with picket signs and politely request to maybe be heard, possibly, please, even though that apparently has yet to have changed anything.

And if what I heard about the MPD going to protect the murderer cops and ringing up around the police station instead of de-escalating things or offering solutions or doing literally anything else is true, I'd be even more glad to see the whole lot of cops get dinged through investigations of past and present actions than I already was, should that happen. (Given the "protect our own" culture, though, I will only hold half a breath it'll actually happen, let alone go anywhere.)

Misconduct lawsuits
Minneapolis made $14 million in payouts for alleged police misconduct between 2006 and 2012 [68]

Hamza Jeylani threat
In 2015, Minneapolis officer Rod Webber threatened a black teenager, Hamza Jeylani, who captured the incident on his phone. "Plain and simple, I'm going to be honest with you. If you fuck with me I'm going to break your legs," Webber told Jeylani. When Jeylani asked Webber why he was being pulled over, Webber replied, "because I feel like arresting you."[69] Webber was subsequently fired.[70]

Green Bay incident
The department did respond in 2013, however, when the Green Bay, Wisconsin Police Department responded to a disturbance that involved two off-duty Minneapolis police officers. Both officers were subsequently fired. The incident began with Shawn Powell and Brian Thole, both employed at the department's north Minneapolis precinct at the time, texting a Green Bay officer he knew, Nate Allen, referring to Allen as "Nigs," and, when Allen did not respond, "you faggots." Referring to a black man who drove by, he said to Allen and another Green Bay officer, "What is that? Green Bay is too nigger friendly." Powell repeated the racial slur a number of times later related to a clash he and Thole had with four black men, at least one of whom Powell hit in the face. Questioned about what started the incident, Powell told Green Bay police that the other men were "doing their monkey shit." [71] When Green Bay officers did not pursue the black citizens, the Minneapolis officers became abusive with their professional peers, calling them "fucking jokes," and repeatedly disparaging them with similar language. Thole tried to talk them out of making a report because, he said, "I have a lesbian fucking chief who's looking to fire people for any reason."[72]

Both officers had previous misconduct issues. Powell was involved in a lawsuit against the City related to he and other officers severely beating an African American man in 2010. The suit was settled with Minneapolis paying the victim $235,000.[73] Powell was also involved in a lawsuit for the wrongful death of a Somalian man who, according to legal documents, was brutally assaulted, tortured and killed.[74]

Mike Spann beating
Three white Minneapolis police officers were charged in the beating of an African American man in a suburb south of Minneapolis, in 2013. William C. Woodis, Christopher J. Bennett and Andrew R. Allen were off-duty and having drinks at a bar when a black man introduced himself to them. When Apple Valley, Minnesota police were called the officers claimed that Spann followed them out of the bar, but security camera footage showed them following him. Spann's nephew, who was also hit by the officers, as well as another witness who did not know Spann or the officers, said that the officers were "on attack." Woodis and Bennett pled guilty to misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct. Charges against Allen were dropped.

Just a few incidents related to MPD, as per their Wikipedia page, and they wonder why their precinct is getting torn down.

I feel bad for the local liquor store that burned. I feel absolutely zero sympathy for MPD. They've done so much evil shit over the years, that it's about time those men be scared to walk out on the streets.

Godwilling the MPD will be disbanded and reorganized. The violence can end then.

they could be put under federal supervision by Trump.

Not only beacuse setting things on fire is wrong and evil, but beacuse this will just spread COVID-19 more.

Also a horrifying thought, the businesses that are already barely scraping by beacuse of the Trump Administrations poor financial assistance during this time are going to be really fucked if they set on fire during all of this.

I’m not talking about ISIL, I’m referring to the Free Syrian Army. ISIL doesn’t even pretend to be democratic, and they basically don’t exist anymore

People have a first amendment right to protest. A pandemic doesn't remove it.

Destroying property is another matter. There is no justification for that.

So the man was on the ground, unarmed, saying he was unable to breathe and the officers did not let up in any way? That is just fucking murder and the officers should be charged. But I don't condone the apparent burning and looting that went down. I understand the anger and support the cause, but breaking shit is not all that helpful.

While I'm not condoning destruction of property via rioting, I also perfectly understand the immense anger people feel that makes them want to fucking riot. When police brutality is as American as apple pie, it's something that eventually will make people hit their breaking point, though I would hope that people refrain from looting and arson. It's worth noting, too, that many of the MN protesters have been peaceful.

As for the officer in question, I hope that miserable fuck rots.
