Man, I wouldn't normally say this but...I'm kinda impressed by the local coverage right now.

Two nights now I've binged the shit out the local news covering the protests, riots, and looters.

Last night was fucking epic if less solid. I mentioned it briefly in a post...basically two main voices, one sensationalist, talking about the damage and looters, and then another voice bringing things back the context of the protest and the distinction from the looters and vandals. Turns out it was a black anchor and a white one.

Today, way more together. Still the same thing, mostly just the helicopter flying around. All day they've been clear. Over here are people protesting a long history of abuse and neglect that has come to a head. Some are practicing civil disobedience and that's long been part of protest.

And over here is a small group of roving assholes taking advantage of the situation to vandalize and loot. They appear to be organized and have no interest in the protest, they're just assholes.

Here, people with valid concerns voicing decent.

Here, jackasses.

All the people that they've gotten to come speak have been black community leaders and people at the protest. They have not let the looting and the violence overwhelm the message of the protests. They've been careful about breaking news, waiting for confirmation before analyzing it so they don't spend ten minutes speculating something that was based on bullshit.

Just...not bad, local news channel.Not perfect, but under the circumstances I expected to be way more frustrated with the coverage.

I'm still not happy about historical stuff being destroyed, but the building itself sounds like a shitty monument honouring a collection of traitorous slavers, rather than simply a historical record keeper.
