To rephrase: in much of the rest of the world, the dems and the republicans would be considered a single party on the right side of the spectrum.
It is just that in the USA 90% of the spectrum is ignored; so they seem to be on opposite sides there.
Kinda like saying violet and purple are very different colours; which is true - but if one looks at a spectrum that also contains yellow, green, red etc. they seem much more alike.

That's terrible. I hope those people are okay.

SD_Film Artists wrote:Good point. Sometimes people are happy to say what not to do but they become quiet when it comes to suggesting a realistic alternative. Having said that, I think there are better ways to protest than destroying a store who's owner may or may not have supported you.

I don't disagree. I don't at all like the idea of burning or trashing and looting small businesses and so on.

In an ideal situation we wouldn't have burnings or lootings of megacorporation stores either, but this obviously isn't an ideal situation, and I don't care as much about the damage to them simply because they can eat the cost--even Target spoke up and was like "Nah we're not upset, we're coming back" today. And since corporations pretty much own this country, well. Forcing them to make a choice may be worth something. Almost my only worries with ruined megacorp stores are about the people who work at them and interruptions to supply chains in neighborhoods that may lack other options without one (which needs to be addressed for sure, but is a matter for a little later).

Leave the little person out of it though for sure. That should be inviolable. Pharmacies too, even if they are a big chain; people's lives definitely rely on those.

Don't have a lot to spare given the need to keep our own household afloat in present circumstances, but we're passing what we can out to different gofundmes for such cases; would recommend anyone else who can chip in even a little to do same. Minneapolis and St. Paul each had pages with several this morning; I'm sure other cities do now too if you toss a quick Google at it.

That is very much the case. I would say that the republicans have been moving further into the right over the past few years (into the ultraviolet if you will), but they are still pretty similar on a great many issues. American voters often find themselves offered a false choice between two superficially different options, and so long as that continues, no real change can occur within the system.

The question now is what will dominate - covid or the riots.
I am still guessing covid though.

I'm going with COVID-19.

It's killed more people and will keep on killing people long after the riots calm down.

Everybody in Australia might have thought that.

But the terrible year America has had so far should make us Australians keep quiet. Anything we say now will sound either gloating or patronizing. Don't you think?

Which riots? The ones in Hong Kong or the ones in the USA. My money is on the event that actually effects other countries. Almost every single person on the planet has been impacted by Covid, at the very least, through some kind of lock down. Same cannot be said about the Australian fires, nor riots in Hong Kong, nor riots in the USA. Something will happen that won't eliminate Covid, but will dwarf it. I predicted that weeks ago, look at my "hope is for morons" dispatch

Well, Trump did tell these fine officers that hurting a suspect a little during an arrest was fine...

But yes. Plenty of blame to go around.

Also yes. Lots of blame from dems and republicans too be spread here.

Main people to blame in this are the morons who think beating people with wooden planks will do anything to help the problem of police brutality.

Years are arbitrary demarcations of time. The only things that obey years are the seasons.

Unless you live in some parts of the tropics, where seasons repeat themselves every six months, effectively having two seasonal cycles per year (when the rest of the world has one seasonal cycle), or if you live in parts of the tropics which have seasons at all, as it's always the same temperature and always rainy, but that's irrelevant to the discussion, so, carry on...

Not really. As mentioned earlier in the thread Trevor Noah of the daily show asked the loaded counter question how the protesters would benefit from NOT rioting.
Because decades of peaceful protests still mean a jogger can be hunted down and killed, a cop will sit on your neck until you die "because he can" and a woman in a park will not hesitate to try to ruin your life with a false accusation. Protest peacefully by kneeling, hurting nobody and destroying exactly zero property ? Get yelled at by the president and lose your job.

Rioting does nothing to benefit them. Not rioting does nothing to benefit them. The only ones who benefit from them not rioting are the people supporting the existing system; so why should they give a fuck ?
