Oh yeah. With all these nation wide riots and protest Corona is going to have a field day. Who would have though police brutality would be the inciting incident in extending the lockdown?

It actually makes some sense.
The lock downs leave people in desperation and poverty so people get angry and riot, but that fixes nothing, just makes it worse. The lock downs are no doubt part of the cause of despair and anger. But of course rioting does not fix the disease.

That is the symptom, not the disease but it is something I might consider. But I have limited to spend on donations and ever more people needing it.

The problems are much deeper than that. Much deeper than the man first murdered by a police officer.

Decades of outsourcing the jobs of urban communities to slaves labor overseas, collapse of social institutions, lack of purpose, corruption in city governments, people blindly re-electing the same people they riot against (you get the government you vote for), etc.

There are also groups working on deeper issues, if you feel like charity is too simplistic.

I mean again I vote. Many working on the deeper issues are right about the disease but completely wrong about the cure. No group I have found yet has it right.
But I will vote for the least bad candidate.

Lockdown boredom and worries probably gave some fuel to the fire, but yet another murder of a minority person by the police with no reaction lit the match, and the violent response to the originally peaceful protests tossed that match into the fuel.

Frankly, I don’t think voting is a very profound exercise of civic duty, and the escalation of political commitment that these protests have created is again what I think will be the lasting contribution of these chaotic days. Not that voting is useless, but on its own it’s a very solitary activity, the opposite of politics.

It is unfortunate that with so many people desperately looking for jobs- just as things were beginning to open back up- many businesses will not be able to hire and may be forced to close because of these riots.
It is also unfortunate that, as usual, the negative will outshine the positive. Any positive effect that the activists hoped to achieve is deeply contaminated (both figuratively- violence- and literally- Covid)

Outsourcing, lead contamination, the dismantling of the mental health system, collapse of critical civic institutions (including the massive downsizing of the National Guard from the late 60s onward), corrupt city governments (yeah we hate our city governments but just re elect the same people from the same parties) that we ourselves elected.

The tinder was already piled high enough. Dump some lock down gasoline, a police killing match and off it goes.

Again a fail to see this a an “escalating of civic commitments”. Sure the point of voting is somewhat undermined when they will just re elect the same parties and people to run the cities.
