Well there is not much I can say aside from I disagree.

There's no reason to disagree. Soft power only exists in perception. Hard power exists independently of whether you perceive it. One is clearly more applicable than the other.

In terms of hard power.

But there is more to power than your military.

Germany is the de facto leader of the European Union, and while it does not exercise sovereign control over these states, its influence is quite large.

Now, the traditional five great powers were the P5 of the UNSC, and, while the UK and France are not great powers any more, there can be a case for them as strong regional powers.

nah, it's just that rightwing libertarians, especially the american sort, have increasingly become the modern equivalents of orwell's pacifist intelligentsia -- peace at all costs, even if it means authoritarian government

Whether democracy is good or not depends upon the circumstances. If a country is poorly developed for democracy, lacks a robust education system and its people aren’t very democratically able, then it is no better than autocratic or oligarchic systems. However when it has a strong system of checks and balances combined with an able voting population, then it is much better than most other systems.

Autocrats and dictators can be useful in developing a country for democracy, but democracy isn’t the go-to system upon toppling a regime (see: Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, etc). Ideally countries would be placed under a pro-democracy dictator who would see to the building of key infrastructure, educating the populace in complimentary ideals and civic duties, intelligently foster democratic bases and actually drain the swamp of those who could immediately jeopardise democratisation either through imprisonment, execution, re-education and other methods.

Perception is important, yes, but it's good to be able to back perception with reality, as otherwise as soon as countries realize there's not that much reason to be on your side, they will defect.

It'd be better if everyone involved was genuinely fighting to impliment ideas which they believed would benefit the nation and its people, but they aren't. They're fighting to keep their jobs, please their donors, and ensure they have a nice career and a hefty pension afterwards.

I would rather be ruled without question by one man or group who genuinely cared for the good of their fellow countrymen than get to walk out once every 3 years and choose between:

[ ] Do you want your country owned by China economically and racially?
[ ] Do you want your country owned by China economically and socially?
[ ] Do you want to be actively discriminated against for being a majority in your country?
[ ] Do you want old people to get more benefits, only because the leader of this party knows the majority of his voters are old?
[ ] Do you want whatever the blue party says, but in yellow?
[ ] Do you want your vote to be thrown in the rubbish because of the MMP vote redistribution system?
[ ] Do you want the a vocal minority sect of the minority group in your country to rule everything?
*All options now come with compulsory bending the knee to China.

Obviously your mileage may vary but the above is my country anyway.

The PRC uses force to control its own corporations and keep them from making deals harmful to the PRC as a whole, while as a whole, the rest of the world doesn't. Therefore, the PRC can play pay-to-win international politics much more effectively than countries hampered by rogue corporations lobbying for things harmful for their host countries as a whole, but profitable for them personally, for example, offshoring jobs, respecting the IP of foreigners, etc.
