Measure of a Man

Postby Green October Z » Fri May 08, 2020 2:48 pm

Being a man is all about being dominant, strong, and taking what is rightfully yours. A true man works hard, is heterosexual, owns a pickup truck, a large dog, drinks beer, owns guns, doesn't talk about feelings, lifts weights, eats red meat a lot, and smokes cigars.

At least, that is what many people say. Seriously, what does it mean to be a man? Do you have to do all those things? Do you have to be insensitive or can you have a heart? Personally I know many men who believe in equality in relationships, aren't heterosexual, drive cars or use public transport, have cats, don't drink or smoke, have no guns, have hearts, and don't eat much red meat if any.

I myself have always preferred equality in my friendships and relationships, have a heart, am asexual, prefer ferrets and cats over dogs, don't drink alcohol much, have no guns, and don't smoke. Add that with the fact that I am 5'3" and have a rather androgynous appearance that has often led me to me being mistaken for a girl, I certainly don't fit the stereotypical image of manliness.

To me, the whole notion of a "true man" is nothing more than a piece of sexist bullshit that should have been left in the 1980's. But what about you? Do you think that the "true man" notion has any merits today? Or do you see it as a different meaning?

As a guy who also gets mistaken for a woman not infrequently, I don't really think there is much to the archetypal idea of masculinity. Men and women (and those of other identities) aren't really that different mentally, so there is no reason that certain individuals should have to obey norms simply because of their gender. Furthermore, many of the ideas traditionally associated with masculinity (such as being dominant over women, or not talking about one's emotions) are extremely problematic in their own right.

Just click the little spoiler at the bottom of my signature to see how I feel.

In all honesty it's BS. Being a man isn't about how much brisket you eat, you many trees you chop down, how many trucks you own, etc.
What is being a man then? Being a man is protecting people, caring for people, and overall being a good influence on your community. Helping those who need it, standing up for those who can't stand up for themselves, that's a real man, I don't care what people say. I'm not looking at how many trucks you own to see how big of a man are, I'm looking at how you act.

Personally, as long as people aren't doing anything illegal, they can do what they want. Some men will be more like that stereotype you offered, others won't. Both ways of being are fine in my eyes. "I'm a man therefore I must be like this or do that" isn't logical. If something is worth doing or being like, better, logical reasons can be found to do it/be it.

I can get behind some of the ideals of being a 'true Man' such as providing for one's dependant loved ones, supporting all of one's loved ones when they are down and protecting them. I'd equally support women to do that too though, since it just sounds like good policy.

Agreed, certainly some of the things men are traditionally supposed to be are positive, but they shouldn't be specific to a certain gender

"A true man has traits A, B, C, D and E. I'm a man and I have traits NOT-A, NOT-B, NOT-C, NOT-D, and NOT-E. I do not have the traits of a true man and nor do most of my bloke friends, therefore the entire concept of a "true man" deserves to be consigned to the recycle bin."

Males (and females) exist, and so do men (and women), although I'd happily argue that what exactly makes a man a man depends on both various universal factors and a few local factors. The archetypal True Man described in OP may be a common sight in the Deep South or elsewhere in the rural USA and he may have a decent work ethic and the odd pint of Boddingtons or two every week in common with my husband... except that my better half in the real world sees no need for a car, a pet, or a ciggy.

To comprehend the meaning of this quote from Earnest Hemingway.

...nothing could happen to me that had not happened to all men before me. Whatever I had to do men had always done. If they had done it then I could do it too and the best thing was not to worry about it.

Great read, and I really couldn't agree more! I could see this also as an example for "true woman". Do woman have to ear make-up, high heels, drink wine, and stay at home with the children. I believe it is all sexist bull.

Well, I ultimately think it means living the seven lively virtues: chastity, temperance, charity, diligence, patience, kindness, and humility. If a man lives in such a way and works to overcome sin, he effectively can be referred to as a good man.
