It's the random people who think that running a guy down in your truck and shooting him is self defense, and when it becomes clear how unjustified this was, they try to rewrite history so the victim is a dangerous animal that had to be put down. The victim could have been a church choir boy and I guarantee you they would be talking about the time he shoplifter a bag of cheetos at age 5 just to push the idea that him being shot was a good thing. I won't say that everyone who pushes this idea is an out and out racist but I'm pretty sure a majority of them are at least unconsciously prejudiced.

Lacking an established pattern, it’s hard to see it as stalking.

Maybe tye escalation from chase with vehicle to waylaying and assault can be considered as a pattern? I don't see a requirement of time duration for the pattern.

Usually a pattern must be longer than a single continuous event to constitute a pattern.
