If i can speak from my experience, i see myself opposite to gender & sex, that was expected from me since childhood. If it is only gender, then i could simply "change wardrobe", but it is no solution for my problems.
From my understanding that is an extremely common experience for transgender people.
For many it could be a result of the fact that our society often treats biological sex as a part of the gender role, for example society says that if you are a woman you are expected to be biologically female (have primary and secondary female sex characteristics, two X chromosomes, and a high amount of estrogen), and if you are a man you are expected to be biologically male (have primary and secondary male sex characteristics, an X and Y chromosome, and a high amount of testosterone), society tends to start from that social role and build all the rest of the social construct of gender on top of that.
