You're doing that San Lumen thing now. Putting the extreme opposite of your own view as though that's what I'm saying. I've never said that before and I'm not saying that now.

He said the U.S. had to institute severe measures because Covid-19 cases were exploding then. “But now is the time, depending upon where you are and what your situation is, to begin to seriously look at reopening the economy, reopening the country to try to get back to some degree of normal.”

However, Fauci also cautioned states against reducing social distancing measures too quickly, adding they must take “very significant precautions.”

“In general, I think most of the country is doing it in a prudent way,” he said. “There are obviously some situations where people might be jumping over that. I just say please proceed with caution if you’re going to do that.”

Fauci has been criticized in recent days by Republicans, including U.S. lawmakers Rand Paul and Andy Biggs, for making comments appearing to advocate for keeping some businesses closed longer.

Just last week, Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, warned members of Congress that the United States could face even more “suffering and death” from the coronavirus if some states rush to reopen businesses too early.

It could also hinder states “on the road to try to get back to an economic recovery,” he testified at a hearing before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on May 12. “It would almost turn the clock back rather than going forward. That is my major concern.”

That's from the article San Lumen linked.

Funny how those in favor of lifting restrictions, now find dr. Fauci to be an authority on what's good for the economy. They didn't put a lot of weight on his words when he was talking about what's good for people's health ... ie the one subject on which he's a genuine authority.

Maybe I shouldn't have said "burning his reputation". It's more like trading it. His reputation goes down with the Save Lives people, but it goes up with the Save Jobs people.

Idk if you're talking about me or Lumen but I never doubted Fauci's authority.

Cuomo should be jailed and charged with murder for his actions.

Was there a better alternative?
Every discharged elderly back to the home of some relative? Would people have then complained about the burden of housing their own elderly?

(nursing homes for elderly are pretty pathetic institutions to start with regardless)

They had to put the infected in with old people at a nursing home? They had nowhere else they could put them?

Many people do something similar with headbands; though a hat would probably also work.

It however is indeed extra weight on the glasses.

The temple of a pair of glasses is near the ear. Got it.

The weight of glasses, on my ears but particularly my nose, gives me headaches. Fortunately now I have very light weight glasses. Though they were lighter when I first got them: they were the highest refractive index available (meaning thinner lenses) but last time I had the lenses replaced I couldn't afford that material. But when I was young I kept trying for large lenses and low price, kept getting headaches, it really says nothing good about me that it took so long to learn. Particularly since the only cheap lenses were GLASS. Buy really good frames, don't break or lose them, and when the lenses are too scratched just replace the lenses. It's a good idea to keep a copy or the original of the paper template the optometrist uses to cut the lenses, your optometrist will do a better job with the template than trying to copy from a lens.

And despite all that I still get headaches. Can't adjust the arms to be any looser or they slide down my nose. Sigh.

I still believe people should go full plague doctor with big, scary beaks to encourage social distancing.
Sadly law enforcement indeed will probably not agree.

Apparently they're called "ear savers". Somewhat predictably, if you google them, all that you get is millions of DIY suggestions.

Some of the ones I saw were quite stylish, probably worth the money if one wears a mask a lot.

DIY for me. Pair of pliers, some thin wire, and a little bit of shrink tubing to cover where the wire forms a loop.

Yeah. Of all the departments in our university, it turns out the Archeology department has some 3d printers, which they've been using to mass-produce them for the local hospital.

I never said you did. All you said was "Or maybe he is right?"

But back then I was naively trusting that dr. Fauci said something which he didn't actually say. I'm actually a bit embarassed about that: I did read the article provided but didn't pick up that even the article (which isn't great) didn't make the claim about "irreparable damage to the economy".

If you watch the snippet of interview, notice how CNBC's handsome presenter gets the whole screen, but when dr. Fauci (who's not so handsome) starts to speak, he gets miniaturized next to a stock ticker or some rubbish. It's quite degrading.

He speaks a lot better from the podium I think. I'm not saying teleprompter, necessarily. I think he's smart enough to go out there with outlines of a speech in his head, and answers prepared for the likely questions.

Here it is again. Remember he was asked "is the public health benefit from broad lockdowns at this point worth such extreme damage to livelihoods?"

A - well I have no disagreement, we must protect the most vulnerable, and B - yes, depending on the dynamics of the infection in a particular state, city, region, town, county that you're in, we certainly want to, in a cautious way, be opening. We can't stay "locked down" for such a considerable period of time, that you might do irreparable damage and have unintended consequences including consequences for health, and it's for that reason that the guidelines are being put forth so that the states and the cities can start to re-enter and re-open. So we are enthusiastic about re-opening and I think we can do it in a pace that would be reasonable and would get us back as a society from the morale standpoint as well as the economy. I don't want people to think that any of us feel that staying "locked down" for a prolonged period of time is the way to go. We hadda do that when we had the explosion of cases. But now is the time, depending on where you are and what your situation is, to begin to seriously look at reopening the economy, reopening the country to try to get back to some degree of normal. I'm totally in favor of that, if uh, done in the proper way and the appropriate setting.

He said the easing of restrictions is for people's health. To prevent unintended consequences, and (if you want) irreparable damage, to people's health.

He adds another reason. As in "get us back as a society from the morale standpoint as well as the economy". Whether the economy will recover quickly, he does not say. Whether it will recover completely, he does not say. Luckily for us all he's not a doctor of the stonks.

There's a pandemic out there my guy, it's not like he's being unreasonable to be afraid that reopening a hot tourist trap in the peak season when we've not really peaked nationally (with cases) could easily lead to a resurgence of cases.

Why is this happening? Why?

Why are they already allowing mass gatherings? Why are casinos reopening? And why did Indiana allow gatherings of 100? America what are you doing? I can't take this country seriously. We just suffered mass death and the response is "...okay time to go back to normal."

There's a pandemic out there my guy, it's not like he's being unreasonable to be afraid that reopening a hot tourist trap in the peak season when we've not really peaked nationally (with cases) could easily lead to a resurgence of cases.

And what should Vegas do not reopen them until there is a cure or vaccine and completely destroy their economy?

They can and probably should reopen if things look good locally, just not the strip itself. That should hold off until we're sure cases are declining nationally. It could all come at once if we presume people are smart regarding travel, but we can't really presume that.

I understand that the strip is essentially Las Vegas to an extent but lack of diverse industry was silly.

We aren't much more than a month pass the peak of cases. Vegas should not be opening right now.

Gotta have a little bit of darkness within you just to survive. You gotta stoop low everyday it seems like. Stoop all the way down to the devil in these times. And then one day you look in the mirror and you realize that you ain't you anymore. You're just another monster, and thanks to your actions, someone else will eventually become as warped and twisted as you. Never forget that the best of us are just the best of a bad lot. Being at the top of a pile of feces doesn't make you anything but shit like the rest. Never forget that.

How about we go swimming during a thunderstorm? How about we go hiking in a forest fire? Yeah, you need to live life and not be scared of everything - I can still die in a swimming pool or while hiking in the best conditions, but that doesn't mean going out in the worst conditions is a sensible thing to do.

Such an easy statement to make when the city is on the verge of bankruptcy. It is their economy.

Then maybe they'll learn from this and adapt their economy to be more resilient in the future.
