State deals with foreign affairs, it's not way out of their turf.

The WHO has an annual budget of $4.8 billion, which really isn't much. To rival it though, I think a much bigger budget would be required of the US. A new rival organization would not have established contacts and voluntary co-operation from many other countries ... it would basically have to fund its way to credibility. And if it's not just going to be a copy, I think it would want the ability to mount independent investigations (the Department of Spies er I mean State could probably help).

If Trump is thinking of setting up a rival with the $200 million he's going to save "defunding" the WHO, it will be a pathetic and short-lived thing.

His options are:
Ask Congress for the money (lol)
Scavenge some money from State (budget $52 billion)
Scavenge some money from USAID (budget $27 billion)

So that's my answer. There's more money in State.

Even Doctor Fauci says keeping lockdowns and other restrictions for too long could cause irreparable damage.

I'm not going to argue with him, but I'm also not going to take him as an authority on what's good for the economy. He knows no more about that, than you or I do. He's out of field.

He should never have gotten suckered into answering that question, toeing the White House line just harms his credibility.

I'd rather he keeps his credibility so US people continue to follow his medical advice.

It comes off as condescending when you’re making a genuine case for reopening talking about unemployment and economic loss, yet people keep repeating the "listen to the experts, they know what’s best for you." when clearly they can’t know what’s best for me if it’s causing me to lose my source of income

There is POLITICAL disagreement on how long lockdowns should last. Dr. Fauci was giving a POLITICAL opinion.

That it might have been a political opinion ON ECONOMICS is neither here nor there.

"Government said groups of 10 can hang."

A message I got from my friend Tyler, who does not appear to know who the governor is, or that the state and federal government are different. Just "government sez" like the government is one entity.

You're doing that San Lumen thing now. Putting the extreme opposite of your own view as though that's what I'm saying. I've never said that before and I'm not saying that now.

He said the U.S. had to institute severe measures because Covid-19 cases were exploding then. “But now is the time, depending upon where you are and what your situation is, to begin to seriously look at reopening the economy, reopening the country to try to get back to some degree of normal.”

However, Fauci also cautioned states against reducing social distancing measures too quickly, adding they must take “very significant precautions.”

“In general, I think most of the country is doing it in a prudent way,” he said. “There are obviously some situations where people might be jumping over that. I just say please proceed with caution if you’re going to do that.”

Fauci has been criticized in recent days by Republicans, including U.S. lawmakers Rand Paul and Andy Biggs, for making comments appearing to advocate for keeping some businesses closed longer.

Just last week, Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, warned members of Congress that the United States could face even more “suffering and death” from the coronavirus if some states rush to reopen businesses too early.

It could also hinder states “on the road to try to get back to an economic recovery,” he testified at a hearing before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on May 12. “It would almost turn the clock back rather than going forward. That is my major concern.”

That's from the article San Lumen linked.

Funny how those in favor of lifting restrictions, now find dr. Fauci to be an authority on what's good for the economy. They didn't put a lot of weight on his words when he was talking about what's good for people's health ... ie the one subject on which he's a genuine authority.

Maybe I shouldn't have said "burning his reputation". It's more like trading it. His reputation goes down with the Save Lives people, but it goes up with the Save Jobs people.

I'm impressed the governor went with the decimal system. "Government sez groups of a dozen can hang" would be so much more medieval!
