Yeah, but it’s GVH. Mate probably thinks speed limits are tyranny.

Daily reminder that GVH thinks rabies quarantine measures aren't for him and introducing an untreatable disease to Britain is just fine.

Indeed.

My best-case scenario is that this situation exposes the complete incompetence and in some cases evil of modern governments, people get sick of it and want change, and leads to some long-term positive changes (even if in the short term it worsens).

My worst-case scenario is that in a few years, Coronavirus (or at least the significant threat it poses) is gone, nobody gives a shit about changing anything, and we go right back to pre-pandemic conditions, just with more authoritarian laws slipped through during the pandemic that nobody cares to remove (or, if a state goes full authoritarian, can remove).

If we don't learn from this, something worse will come along that is far deadlier and will burn the world to the ground.

*cough cough* Climate Change.

The UK doesn't deserve this fate.

And then if we don't learn from that impending threat and do something to at least mitigate it (if we can't completely stop it by the time we get off our asses and deal with it), we probably deserve our fate.

Be careful, GVH has been said to report those to the mods who call him out.

For this and other reasons he'd ended up on my foelist.

We have until 2030 to reverse course and if we don't, we have till either 2050 or 2100 before the modern world comes to an end from floods, fires and famine. I would like to think we will deal with climate change but knowing how people work, let's just say I think my grandkids are gonna be living in cave somewhere in the Michigan marshland, overlooking the half submerged monoliths that once were the Detroit skyline.

Either way you sacrifice freedoms.

You either sacrifice the freedoms of many temporarily (assuming you're not living in an authoritarian or about-to-be-authoritarian state) to reduce the number of people who lose their freedoms permanently, or sacrifice the freedoms of a larger number of people permanently to prevent the temporary loss of the freedoms of many.

Their is freedom in the afterlife.

Yes I did. If you don't like the answer then maybe you've asked the wrong question.

I'm slightly more optimistic than that, but yeah, if we don't act soon it's gonna be grim.

Regardless, to bring it back to the thread topic, I hope this pandemic serves as a wake-up call as to why the current modern system desperately needs improvement if we want a good future.
