I may be wrong, but I believe in this second wave, cases are rising, but the fatality rate is much lower, right?

Actually, this is kind of great news.

If the number of infections is actually 10x higher than reported, that also means the percentage of hospitalization/death is 10x lower.

Not that we don't still need to do stuff, but these results are encouraging in the march toward herd immunity.

Oh I agree. They must have tourists, who would still come if it was a museum, but if I'm going to pay to get in I'd like the museum experience AND a cold beer. Maybe even a chance to pick up!

I wonder if renovating it was really a good idea. Tourists would prefer the original and being "out of date" is a good thing in that context. Modern beer taps give colder beer, I guess that's a good upgrade.

Maybe both is best, the bar bit to get a cold drink, and the museum bit to establish the historical lineage and prevent the Stonewall from becoming a Bawdyhouse of Theseus.

We still haven’t proven if herd immunity exists though but it is encouraging if it exists

I wonder if this is the strain that affected NJ and NY at the start of the outbreak making its way West, as opposed to the variant that first arrived on the West Coast and was thought to be milder.

That's a good question but regardless, places like Texas, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, Arizona, and Georgia that opened up too soon are starting to show why that was a bad idea. Of course, exceptions like California and North Carolina, which remained locked down and have begun to ease, but are showing signs of a resurgence. It's especially concerning that hospitalizations in those States are increasing if I'm not mistaken. It seems in particular, the South to South-West is now experiencing surge, and this is especially among younger Americans who Fauci warns of ‘more and more’ coronavirus complications in young people.

While certainly increased testing and the protests have played a part in the increased cases, reopening the State too soon and not taking it seriously as they should have. But it doesn't seem they won't go backwards and go on lockdown, which means if the current measures are in place, infections are probably not going to go down for some time.

I don't see how you came to that conclusion, could you elaborate on how ten times higher infections means 10x less death?

It has to do with transmission and hospitalization rates. If you check the statistics on CoVID19. There seem to be more people infected but not as many in hospital.

We have no idea, and won't have any idea for several weeks yet - deaths cases by some time. A drop in naive fatality rate (deaths today divided by cases today) is generally a bad thing: it means that the disease is spreading faster, and tells you essentially nothing about the actual death rate.

Think about this. We thought there were 2.3 million cases, with X amount of deaths. There's actually 23 million. Total number of deaths (checking google right now) is 124,000. let x equal the death rate as a decimal.

Before, we thought 2,300,000 * x = 124,000

To get the decimal, we divide both sides by 2,300,000.

We then get -

x = 0.054 (rounded), or 5.4%

But hey, it's not 2.3 million. It's 23 million!

23,000,000 * x = 124,000

Divide both sides by 23,000,000...

x = 0.0054 (rounded), or 0.54%

So the death rate went down by 90% because the number of actual cases went up to 10 times.

Make sense?

(It's not quite that simple, some of the people sick now WILL die, they're dying now, and death rate isn't quite that easy to calculate, but the principle is sound - 10x the cases, mostly asymptomatic, means the death rate is 10 times lower)

That is a actually great point. Thank you.

Still kind of scary seeing how far COVID-19 spread.

After the spike of the last two weeks, seems like AR is leveling off and reducing transmission rates. From 1.14 last week, we’re down to 1.06 and decreasing. I hope the downtrend continues.
