Story time!

My parents' neighbors are a very wealthy and successful family of five. All of them are extremely well educated and informed, practice social distancing, wear masks and gloves, and only go out when they need to. However, they are also having their landscape redone and a lot of the workers are not wearing masks, being sanitary, and are freely going in and out of the house to use the restroom, etc. All this despite the family repeatedly telling them, their boss, and the landscape architect that they need to wear masks. Y'all can probably guess where this is going, but some of the workers were working while showing symptoms and now the whole family is COVID-positive.

Fast forward to today and the father was doing very badly. The family tried calling an ambulance and were told they'd only pick him up if his pulse oximetry fell to 93. My mom ran to Walgreens, bought them a pulse oximeter, and left it for them. So despite the fact that he's checking every box (high fever, insane chest pain, difficulty breathing, and painful coughs) because this one test is right at the line (he's at 93) they're refusing to pick him up.

I get being cautious, especially if you're EMS, but the dude clearly needs to go to a hospital and possibly get on a ventilator.

I'm in Travis county and we officially jumped to Stage 5 last night. Abbott is going to likely enforce another five weeks of shutdown but Adler had better put one in place before that.

That just makes me sad, I feel for that family, that's something I really empathize with and I hope he ends up okay. With his age, I'd say it doesn't matter if he's at 97 or 98% oxygen, he is especially vulnerable. It's worth noting, for instance, that a young dude like myself was able to hit about 93% oxygen in April with COVID and know "Okay, right, I probably don't need hospitalization just yet" while anyone older or vulnerable is going to have a totally different reaction to 93% oxygen.

Is it at all possible for his family to drive him to the hospital and say "Look, this guy is extremely ill, we need you to take care of him?"

That isn't being cautious on the part of the EMS. That's protecting the hospital from too many patients. How bad is it in your area?

That is fucked. Those workers and company should be ashamed of themselves. As for the hospital by the sound of it they are already overwhelmed and cannot really handle more patients. I really hope things turn out well for the father and his family.

They might do that, but they're all super sick so I don't know how feasible it is.

In my parents' area it's not too bad, but they live in a subdivision and kind of out of the way from major metros. Where I live (Travis County/Austin, TX) it's one of the ground zeroes right now. Last week we led the nation in per capita new cases and if we're still not number one we're definitely in the top 5.

Any chance of the family suing the company the workers are employed by? The fact that they did not require their workers to wear masks and social distance when working on a home sounds like reckless endangerment.

How exactly did they catch covid from the workers? Did they have that close of contact with some guys mowing their lawn?

I believe Asle mentioned the workers were going inside to use things like the restroom and they were not wearing masks or gloves. So they may have infected something in the house and that spread to the family?

They wouldn't be coming in my house with no mask. Their asses can stay outside.

I would say it's highly unlikely since they let them into their home, which is where the infection presumably occurred...I don't think that is a required part of the service contract with the landscaper. If it were, that might be a different story. On top of that you'd have to prove that it was those workers tested positive at the time of exposure; simply not wearing a mask by itself wouldn't stand up at all in court.

What I find absurd is that symptomatic people are out working. If anything having symptomatic people stay home seems to be one of the most common-sense ways to prevent the spread of infection, but I imagine in the landscaping industry there aren't exactly a whole lot of employee benefits especially with some many others willing to take your job.

Probably not, overall it appears surfaces aren't as effective a means of transmission as previously thought. A more likely culprit is the air conditioning circulating the virus when the infected people coughed inside the house.

I shall pray for their recovery! I’m sorry that happened to them, I can’t imagine the stress. :(

When I didn’t have a face-mask I actually joked and asked my mom if wearing a church veil over my nose and mouth would work, but then I realized they’re lace and anything as tiny as COVID could probably sneak through.

Technically unless you are wearing some serious lab-grade PPE viruses are going to get in and out; all the mask does is stop the spread of the respiratory droplets the virus rides on thereby substantially reducing the potential viral load if you are in fact infected.

Now, I will say a veil such as that seen at your EF or more traditional OF parish will probably not be very effective in that case either...especially since most of them are thin enough to be questionable whether or not they actually "veil" anything.

Thats most likely in really severe cases. Most covid cases probably don't cause that.

It can happen with any viral infection, it's not particularly surprising it would happen with this one. Honestly, that sounds like another fear-mongering headline, sort of like the one a while back about Kawasaki disease among children with SARS-CoV-2 that has now apparently been completely forgotten.
