I've heard that argument (that if you don't vote you cannot complain) all my life, so much that I would never not vote. However, that does not mean I have to vote for one of the two major parties.

I personally disagree with the argument though. Democracy is more than a ballot box every couple years and just passively accepting what our elected officials do. Not voting is a legitimate part of democracy (though I personally think that a higher voter turnout is better and results in more democratic outcomes). Constantly discussing, negotiating, and pressuring elected officials (through non-electoral politics, especially as a protection for minority groups) during their terms is a part of Democracy too. Constantly demanding your viewpoints get represented or appealed to, even after you have your candidates is a part of Democracy to. That is not to say we don't let our elected officials govern (I am of the opinion that things like the Senate Filibuster, the unrestricted powers of Judicial Review, and the power of the Senate to completely block legislation from the House - though I can accept them reviewing, debating, editing, and slowing legislation - all prevent elected officials from governing) just that the people are still part of the process beyond just the ballot box. Of course, even in the purely electoral sphere, the U.S. needs a long list of electoral reforms, franchise expansion, congressional reforms, judicial reforms, constitutional reforms, campaign finance reforms, and minority protections (after all in a democracy you want majority rule, you want the majority to be unstagmated by a minority view, but you must give certain protections to the minorities in your population to prevent tyranny by the majority, if a minority is not reasonably protected then it cannot be expected to have its views represented and that would delegitimize any democracy).
