This is essentially a variation of the prisoner's dilemma, where your goal is to hit a very specific percentage of subjects giving a desired response, and not more or less.

Humans are famously terrible at this.

Notably the fear of a spoiler leading California to go trump is hideously small odds, even before you account for reticence for people to vote for 3rd party.

In 2016, Hilary got 61.73% of the vote while trump got 31.62%.

Presuming that stays the same, in order for Trump to win, the spoiler would have to draw 30.12% of the vote, but not more than 31.62% of the vote, otherwise the spoiler wins, this means a margin of draw of 1.5% where trump could win due to a spoiler.

Naturally, this is very unlikely.

While I agree with this, I think you should also consider voter enthusiasm. Biden is looking at a 24 point voter enthusiasm gap whereas Clinton was facing only like an 8 point gap. I think when factor this in, a spoiler effect happening in California seems more likely than you make it out to be number-wise, but at the end of the day you're correct.

I mean, it's rare, but comprehensive welfare including child care is rare in general especially outside of the west, as are abortion bans inside of the west.

Ireland also banned abortion for a long time (recent change on that front), and they have comprehensive welfare, but I'm not sure on child care. I'm not familiar enough.

Regardless, this is another reason why I support NatPoVoInterCo.

I sincerely hope the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact is ratified by the required number of states with the required number of electoral votes. However, I am not sure that would be enough to really make the U.S. democratic.

There is also the fact that as soon at it is ratified, opponents of the NatPoVoInterCo will immediately sue it claiming it is unconstitutional (you can already look up the arguments, as flawed as they are, that opponents will use against the NatPoVoInterCo), it will likely go to the Supreme Court and with their autocratic powers of Judicial Review, will determine if they like the NatPoVoInterCo or not and determine its legality then.

Personally I think, more than ever, the primary goal is to get Trump out. Not that I can vote in the US but if I could I would certainly vote for Biden however I think it would be a great idea for him to promise to only run for one term, get Trump out, settle the house and then let new leadership vie for 2024.

I miss when zoo animal treatment (not immigrants in cages) was one of the more serious issues. Though to be fair, homelessness, hunger, poverty, various upcoming crisis were issues too, just no one in mainstream media (or most politicians) paid attention to them.
