The average American? Fuck no. They have not had the time to dig into the history of the California Attorney General or the San Francisco DA's office. They probably are not going to really, truly, base their vote off of Harris.
Of course the political forum types are all up in arms cause the candidates all won't match your views 100% of the time. A VP pick that matches a progressive's view only 60% of the time is better than having Pence matching 0% of their views. There's also a lot of focus on these more minor things and not the bigger picture with Trump and how to battle the GOP.
Biden has made it a big thing, and I don't think that was wise of him. But you shouldn't just look at it from the point of view of the Democrats who've been talking about the choice. They matter of course, particularly the Bernie-aligned ones who were waiting for a reason to come over to Biden, but you've heard A LOT from them about the VP choice.
Consider how this is going to affect moderate and Republican voters. It's a woman, OK, but it's a black woman and that has to rub them up the wrong way. The Democratic party, like the Republican party, is mostly white men. There's no way of spinning the choice of a black woman as anything but Affirmative Action. What's more, Biden has been blatant about it: announcing long ago it would be a woman, then a few weeks ago hinting it would be a person of color. He's rubbing their noses in it, they cannot NOT react.
So the first line of attack will be her previous experience, as a prosecutor. A black prosecutor who went after the low-hanging fruit of black criminals. Imagine how easy it must be to persuade a jury that, regardless of their race, a defendant is guilty. When the prosecutor is black herself.
What appears to Democrats as a great weakness of Harris, is actually a near-unbeatable strength against Republican attacks. She's black, she's a woman, and she's less racist than they are. Republicans are going to be asking themselves "do we have someone just like her?"
