I remember back when people were defending Trump as less terrible than Hillary, and the argument was something like “If we have to have a villain, wouldn’t you prefer he be incompetent at it?”

Right now, I don’t want Bizarro, I want Lex Luthor.

Those were people who never looked past Trump to see the Republican Party lurking the shadows behind him, making lists of conservative judges and things to be done away with.

While Trump will may not hold onto office or any official power, he will still have significant influence over American politics so saying he would have no power is just not really true.

If he would even endorse anybody. I have a feeling he's going to turn on everyone and adopt some kind of "The Republicans betrayed me!" narrative and go back to being a really bad businessman.

If Trump is defeated in 2020, Trumpism will still continue. Tom Cotton, Matt Gaetz, and other similar GOP politicians embody it.

I am really optimistic for the future of the GOP though, the younger generation of Republicans seems to be more third positionist and realizes that unchained capitalism sucks. My man, he's got that social clout.

His Twitter account will still be treated as gospel by a significant chunk of the nation.

What twitter account ? If he is not longer president twitter can just ban him for breaking the TOS.

They probably won't if he remains a cashcow though, so perhaps you are right,

Knowing Trump that is definitely possible. And if he did I would think it would have an interesting effect on the Republicans. I would imagine it would create some factionalism between more diehard supporters of Trump and more moderate Republicans and might split the vote.

It is true in the sense that he will have no authority under the Constitution. I literally do not give two fucks if people still follow him on Twitter. That is completely irrelevant to the powers of the presidency.

Why do we still have military presence in western Europe, anyway? Can't the Euros do these things themselves?

You have a military presence in Europe to intimidate Russia. We're not demanding that you keep a military presence here, you're doing it because you want to, because it serves your interests.

Idk wtf you're on about but DeSantis is a fucking Ttumpist shill. He's been licking Donny's jackboots from the get-go. I dare say he's probably been as bad for Florida as Rick Scott. That pencil-dick weasel's complete lack of a spine, brain, or heart is the reason Florida's COVID cases have been climbing non-stop. He can burn with Trump and the rest of the GOP populists.

Vanity Fair: In March and April a team under Jared Kushner was going to implement a nationwide covid-19 testing program. But this plan just disappeared. Why?
But the effort ran headlong into shifting sentiment at the White House. Trusting his vaunted political instincts, President Trump had been downplaying concerns about the virus and spreading misinformation about it—efforts that were soon amplified by Republican elected officials and right-wing media figures. Worried about the stock market and his reelection prospects, Trump also feared that more testing would only lead to higher case counts and more bad publicity. Meanwhile, Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House’s coronavirus response coordinator, was reportedly sharing models with senior staff that optimistically—and erroneously, it would turn out—predicted the virus would soon fade away.

Against that background, the prospect of launching a large-scale national plan was losing favor, said one public health expert in frequent contact with the White House’s official coronavirus task force.

Most troubling of all, perhaps, was a sentiment the expert said a member of Kushner’s team expressed: that because the virus had hit blue states hardest, a national plan was unnecessary and would not make sense politically. “The political folks believed that because it was going to be relegated to Democratic states, that they could blame those governors, and that would be an effective political strategy,” said the expert.

According to this inside source, the Trump administration is letting Americans die so they can get an angle of attack on their political enemies.
