Origin of your nation name

Postby Aikoriland » Sun Apr 26, 2020 7:13 pm

There is a fairly wide variety of nation names here on nationstates, some of which seem to be fairly unique. So I am curious, why did you choose your nation name?

The name Aikoriland is a nod to two of my favorite countries in the world. Kori (氷) is Japanese for ice and Ai (愛) is Japanese for love. Thus, the name partially translates to love Iceland, where I used to live in my childhood. The use of Japanese is a nod to Japan, which I have been to a couple times and find to be an amazing country.

On that note, my flag also incorporates elements from both the Icelandic flag and the Japanese flag.

Onfande was the last royal name from the Kingdom of Ancona, a former nation which resided where Onfande is now. It was adopted when the Republic of Onfande first started.

I like making flags and discovered NS, so I named my country after the flag.

Western: When Western Fardelshufflestein was first settled in The South Pacific, the navigators believed they were in the West Indies. (Fardelshufflestein used to be a state in the Holy Roman Empire until its people left. Somehow, they ended up in The South Pacific.)

Fardelshufflestein: Shakespeare plays, especially Hamlet, became extremely popular. Long story short, some mischievous stonemasons carved Hamlet's famous soliloquy into the rock in the center of the capital city in 1610. For some reason, the words "Fardels" and "Shuffle" were written larger than the rest of the text, and the rock became jokingly known as the Fardelshufflestein. The state changed its name to Fardelshufflestein right as the Thirty Years' War broke out. (It was the war that drove the Fardelshufflesteiners out of Europe in the first place.)

Jianghu is based on the naming of -- River (Jiang - 江) and Lakes (Hu - 湖) = River and Lakes. This is a reference to the Wuxia and Xianxia genres. Wuxia means = martial Heroes - 武俠 and is a genre of Chinese fiction concerning the adventures of martial artists in ancient China. Xianxia literally means Immortal Heroes - 仙侠. Based on fictional stories featuring magic, demons, ghosts, immortals, and a great deal of Chinese folklore/mythology. But Jianghu figuratively refers to the “Martial World” or the “underground world of martial arts”. A section of society consisting of martial artists, gangsters, thieves, beggars, prostitutes, merchants, entertainers, and anyone else wanting to operate outside of mainstream society or in the grey area of the law.

Enotria is a poetic name for Italy, while Hameenkoski is a region of Finland. In fantasy and future-tech, they're the human (Roman) and dwarf (Finnic speaking tribal Swiss) states which united to form the First Kingdom.
