My thoughts exactly. We know so little about the ocean. Anything could be hiding there.

Indeed. We know more about what's in space than what's in our own oceans.

Everyone is scared of Invader Zim, but nobody ever worries about Dagon.

Many things.

Aikoriland wrote:That's interesting and it certainly be wouldn't surprising to me if Moa and Elephant birds were still living in remote areas.

Not the tallest birds, there were many different species of moa, some of which were not especially tall and could hide in areas where few people go.

i guess the sort of people who can neither commit to fulltime zoology, studying folklore, nor fantasy writing still need to have hobbies

My old university had a dedicated cryptozoology professor. He had a doctorate, too.

“Cryptozoology” seems weird. Was it for writing or comprehension of character or something? It’s hard to believe that there would a dedicated college class and degree to cryptids, and taking them as if they were real beings makes it harder. WhO knoWs!?

Just seems a little difficult to be qualified in the study of creatures which are not known to exist.

Nope. It was a class about cryptids, their characteristics, sightings of them, possible evidence for their existence, possible explanations against their existence, etc.

I only took the intro course because I graduated shortly after.

right? imagine depending not on reasonable hypotheses based on an observation of the natural world and of the possible environments these monsters for the most part did not live in

but on anecdotes from folklore and myths

i mean, i suppose speculating the biological underpinnings of biblical manna is a worthy waste of time, but can it ever be really anything more than that?

And yet, my professor taught at least two different courses about it.

I remember learning a bit about that at university. Definitely sounds like an interesting one. The professor mentioned that similar creatures are alleged to exist in the Sahara Desert.

There are millions of unknown species, but they're all either (a) only subtly different from known ones, (b) very small, or (c) plants, bacteria etc.

The idea of human-sized animals we have only alleged sightings of but no strong evidence for, doesn't really stand up. We'd have killed and eaten them all if they ever did exist.

Maybe sea creatures. There's a lot of ocean and we haven't explored it all.

My old archaeology professor wrote a book called Wildmen: Yeti, Sasquatch and the Neanderthal enigma, I was a bad student though so I've never read it.

Even as late as the 2010s we were still discovering isolated tribes deep in remote places in South America and Africa. Surely, it's also possible that small populations of completely undiscovered creatures may also be lurking around.

The isolated tribes probably didn't want to be found by the scarey flying things.

No kind of animal is smart enough to hide that way, even chimps and orangutans have been slaughtered for meat.

The only way something like a Yeti could survive this long, undetected and unslaughtered, is by being at least as intelligent as a human. Does that seem likely to you?

I mentioned the sea, but let's not forget underground. Inside the hollow earth are probably all manner of fantastic creatures, living on uranium or something.

Maybe they are so smart they invented cloaking devices that occasionally malfunction, hence the occasional sighting and photo :D
