Of course. Or at least one of the news staff.

So far though, KCTV is still broadcasting what appears to me to be their regular programming, so I'm not too concerned.

I don't think we would. China has a larger army, a slightly smaller navy, the DPRK has the largest army in the world, and China has the whole protecting their homeland ideology.

Their air force is a joke; instant air superiority.
Their navy is a joke; instant naval superiority.

Their equipment is old, antiquated, and outdated. The only advantage they have is pure numbers, which means nothing more than they can send men into the meat grinder. We still have more bullets, bombs, missiles, and grenades than they have bodies in their entire country. The sheer firepower of the U.S. military simply cannot be matched. It's not even a contest. Straight-up fight is a U.S. victory. They could probably mount a fairly effective insurgency, but we've been fighting insurgents for the past 60 years and have learned quite a bit about how to handle it. Considering how they treat their own people I expect them to get less sympathy than, say, the Viet Cong or Taliban did.

Nukes off the table, we win hands down. With current technology we might not even have to invade at all. The PLA might be intimidating to China's neighbors - save for Russia - but the U.S. Armed Forces are on a whole other level China simply cannot match. They know this, too. Which is why they prefer economic warfare and espionage when trying to combat our influence around the globe. The fact we're the best customer also means if they get into a scuffle with us, they're the ones who get hurt the most. Especially since the USA still pulls more strings in global politics than the PRC does.

Beijing might not want an American ally on it's borders, but they won't try to fight us over it. Not directly. That's not their style. They'd look for another, safer way to undermine our goals. Dictators don't like gambling with their absolute power and are often complete cowards as a result, less likely to behave militantly.

You really think China would allow a refugee crisis to happen on it's own borders? They'd tell the guards to shoot on sight and it'd be a bloodbath. Crisis averted through genocidal border massacre - the ChiCom way of solving problems. Mao would be proud.

To be honest I think that the humanitarian crisis stemming from regime collapse is the biggest concern of its Asian neighbours, as this is a population who have spent the last 70 years more or less cut off from the outside world, thinking that their leaders are infallible gods. The culture shock alone, stemming from their entire belief system suddenly being pulled away from under them, will likely result in large numbers of people being unable to cope and committing suicide.

Yep. A collapse of the North Korean regime, regardless if foreign powers get involved, would surely cause chaos and massive amounts of refugees. And shit tons of refugees would be at risk to catching Corona and spreading it further. It would not be a pretty situation.

I do see reports about fear of an internal power struggle there. Civil war is mentioned too. But we need to wait for an official confirmation that Kim Jong-Un is dead. He may not be dead and we’ll see him pop up in several weeks.

That's a bit of a pessimistic take.

I'm fairly certain most North Koreans aren't brain dead idiots that truly believe their leaders are gods. More likely than not they accept their leaders are extremely powerful and cannot be overthrown so they're too afraid to try. Same problem in China. That's how dystopias work; nobody really believes the propaganda, they're just too afraid to challenge it. The Black Market is big in North Korea. They smuggle in Western media all the time. People escape all the time, risking everything in the process.

It might be overwhelming for some, but only when they find out how much better life outside North Korea is than inside it. Committing suicide because you're not starving to death anymore? Sorry, that just sounds absurd.

In North Korea, heart surgeon. Number one. Steady hand. One day, Supreme Leader need new heart. I do operation. But, mistake! Supreme Leader die! DPRK very mad. I hide in fishing boat, come to America. No english, no food, no money. Darryl give me job. Now I have house, American car, and new woman. Darryl save life. My big secret: I kill Supreme Leader on purpose. I good surgeon. The best!

On a sidenote, I'm switching to this account for future discussion of the topic because it feels weird talking about Un dying as the USSR.

That being said, I'm not gonna discredit him being dead until I see him alive. I'm also not going to discredit him being alive until I see a coffin. I hope the bastard's dead, and I hope North Korea doesn't go up in flames.

I think giving a nuclear and chemically-armed nation the possibility to use said WMD's against their own populace in a civil war, no matter how unprobable, is pretty bad.
