Damn, you've had longer to become disillusioned than even I have.

You could also few it as "life is full of surprises". Some things you expect will never happen, some things you do not expect will. Some good, some bad.

Try to treat life as an adventure. Prepare, but realise that things almost certainly will not go 100% according to plan.

I'd like one relationship that lasts forever, but if that's not possible I'll take lifelong celibacy over multiple relationships that don't or casual sex, thanks.

I wouldnt say the 1960s is when it changed. It really didn't happen all at once, but in like the 1700s or 1800s society started shifting toward romantic love and then by maybe the 1920s most western societies stopped with the arranged marriage crap and marrying for wealth.

Most people didn't marry for love in say 1352.

If the time I’ve put into CK2 says anything, it’s that marriage only matters to produce heirs and nonaggression pacts, and to make sure your dynasty inherits all the good stuff.

Untrue. You could rape your intended spouse. Then the two of you had to marry according to Biblical law.

Eh, you still had to pay for her, and most average joes at the time didn't have the money so their parents would have to fork it over.

I have a source that proves they aren’t. It’s called life. I see all kinds of people, mostly friends of mine, who treat their relationships as though it were destiny. Pure folly.

Now you are taking the comment out of proportion.

But even working class people wanted to their daughter or son to marry someone respectable.

Truly the best treatise on the nature of marriage throughout history. New Haven America's No dismissed and debunks the folly of romantic narratives through clear and concise logic. The only downside is that I found the piece to be a little long and drawn out, and it seemed to go on for quite some time, but that is beside the point. 4 stars out of 5, truly would recommend.
