It's immaterial to anyone that one genocide happened in 500AD and another happened in 800 (or 1066, etc etc). The Vikings imposed themselves on Britain because they could, just as the Jutish heathens did ten generations before. "Right" and "wrong" here isn't even academically interesting, it's hairsplitting in service of an ideology just as stiff and somehow more stultifying than left liberal democratic religion.

I was just thinking more in the context of the posited game. If the game were taking place in 500 A.D., then clearly the Celts and Romans would have been the good guys. But this game is taking place centuries after that, were in people having nothing to do with the wars of the past are getting invaded by a brutish enemy.

No, teach every boy in schools to stand in a tercio. None of them graduates unless they can form a proper pike square.

But pike squares use the arquebus too, and I though such “modern” gunpowder weapons are degenerate :(

Actually many Germans fraternities still teach sword fighting.

Which is pretty cool.

But un-ironically this is why one year of ROTC should be mandatory again in colleges as it does teach basic military drill and physical fitness. (Of course the US actually has no tradition of the Tercio but for some European countries that would be cool).
Besides it would be pretty cool to see how big some of the college ROTC units would be for some schools, they could raise a legitimate strength Brigade.

Is this rad trad or weird enough?
I feed feral cats, and an opossum was stealing their food. I chased it away with a halberd.

Sounds like witchcraft to me

Dio please do not burn me... :o

They are good to keep the vermin away. The opposite is too, but unlike the cats the opossum does not moderate food intake, dumps the whole bowl and eats it all. I do not want a morbidly obese opossum, but I do not want to shoot it either.

Huh. I'd generally feel compelled to safeguard the opossum and chase off the feral cats.

Individual taste I guess.

I'd poison the feral cats, they're a serious pest.

I would have nothing against the opossum except unlike the cats he eats the entire bowl, and knocks it over. If he had better table manners he could share :(
And I do not want to go broke feeding him only to end up with a opossum that resembles a basketball.

Some places they are, but the are good for keeping vermin away if their numbers are small.

I'm glad to hear it. It's Ogniem i Mieczem (with Fire and Sword), a Polish historical epic based on the first part of the Sienkiewicz trilogy. I think you can find it on youtube.

I recommend you watch Potop (The Deluge) next, another fantastic film. Both are very long though, befitting an epic.

The youtube link in my sig has a link to the full movie in the description, both in Polish and Russian. I know for sure the Polish one has English subtitles.

No I haven't, but I want to. I love the period and historical epics. For now, I'm just getting my fix with the Ogniem i Mieczem II mod for Medival Total War, until I watch Pan Wolodjevsky (the third part of the trilogy, and ironically the first one made in film).

I know Fire and Sword mostly from the Mount and Blade expension/conversion based on that which takes place in the same era.

The era is interesting. I found a clip on YouTube showing the Winged Hussars in battle.
It looks definitely worth watching. Early early modern and late medieval warfare does not get enough portrayal, but I think 1400s to 1600s warfare some of the most interesting.

And I the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth is one of the most interesting and underrepresented states of the era.

Hence why it is a good thing to remind people that churches were not bastions of pure goodness and benevolence with poor defenseless monks being raided by those evil brutish vikings.

Heck, all folklore describes them as greedy and manipulative. Just ask Robin Hood ;)

I'm still waiting for consistency on sexual assault allegations against powerful people. #MeToo have been pretty disappointing the last couple years, especially given how many notable people ought to have been socially crucified over sexual assault allegations and convictions. I'm motivated to make this comment because I remembered that Roman Polanski still has supporters and the two most probable candidates for the presidency are probably serial rapists/harassers.

Sounds like a Disney villain. Maybe make a coat from kitten fur next.
