I'm not sure what you're referring to, attending mass is a requirement. But anyway, the world is a more radical place since the Reformation in terms of political ideology and theology. What followed from the the Protestant Reformation was liberalism in the sense of being anti-monarchist and opposed to the church (including Mainstream American Conservatism, American Liberalism, Socialism, and Communism).
