Yeah, it generally takes more than a decade to execute someone after they've been sentenced.

Unless of course they don't appeal, it which case the timeframe is about six months. But that rarely ever happens.

also re smoking as I said earlier:

zizek once said there's no more real vice, drugs are practically legal, gambling is normalised, sex is fine as long as you are safe, drink is good for you in moderation only, the only true remaining vice is smoking.

smoking is really the last vice. but it's being stamped out everywhere, more or less. the next generation of people won't even know what it is let alone comprehend a world where most people were doing it/it was normal. I guess that's good but the idea of a world where all vice is more or less controlled, regulated and distributed is scary

As I said, the risk of false conviction can be mitigated, but it's hard, if not impossible, to wholly eliminate it; what's more, having convicts remain on death row for an extended period of time whilst successive appeals go through as generally happens in the United States arguably adds to the inhumane nature of the punishment, given the psychological effects on the prisoner, and also undermines one of the common arguments in favour capital punishment, the argument that it's cheaper and more efficient than long-term incarceration.

Eh, cigarettes aren't necessarily being rooted out as much as they're being replaced. Vaping and smoking marijuana are becoming the new norm.

ime a lot of people "socially smoke" but that isnt enough to maintain the practice.

you need a core of pack-a-dayers or the industry will die probably.

But by the same token, smoking if there happens to be weed inside the rollie (depending on where you are of course) probably gets less disapproving looks than if it had just tobacco inside, even though often folk mix a bit of tobacco with the weed for a more even burn etc.

Due to the decline of the uptake of smoking amongst the young in comparison to previous generations, there is a possibility that even the 20 a day smokers will die out eventually.

IIRC smoking cigs is going down, but e-cigs and vapoes have led to an increase in tobacco use by young adults, the first in a long time.

Which is highly concerning, given the lack of scientific data on the long-term health implications of both. As substitutes for traditional cigarettes and a tool to help people quit, vaping and e-cigs were a positive development, but the trend towards non-smokers taking up vaping as a hobby is worrying.
