I just think the stuff they taught in home economics should be brought back and be a mandatory class. Everyone should be well versed in cooking, cleaning, organizing, family management, financial planning, etc., and have a working ability to sew basic things and mend clothes.

If I had to choose one class that would be mandatory for all HS students, I'd choose a basic personal finance course as a requirement. Hands down. It's egregious how many people enter the world without any knowledge of how to rent a place without assistance, how to invest, how to make sure they save their money in the best way etc etc etc.

I'll be teaching HS soon enough, and fuck, I hope I'm even allowed the chance to teach something like that. It's not the fault of young folk for being clueless in this capacity, it's the fault of the schooling systems and their parents.

It's applicable to all subject matters, and everyone could benefit from learning to think more critically.

Car/home maintenance are very important skills too, and I know so many people who wasted needless money because they don't know how to change their oil or paint their rooms or replace the wood on their patios. But these skills are only particularly relevant to car-owners and home-owners, which seems to be a decreasing chunk of the population.

As in the ability to comprehend you are not the center of the world, you are not the brightest, best most special, smartest person on earth that knows better than everyone else and deserves everyone's deference and respect by default. All other life skills can only come after you have accepted this. And yet it's the one thing that that western civilization is working hard to destroy.

I know that being in contact with lots of other people through schooling does not give everyone humility, but cannot think of any reason why other than narcissism and denialism.
