Money doesn't come from nowhere if you're a state. Bankruptcy would mean stiffing someone the state owes money to ... like emergency workers, cops, civil servants of other kinds, medical suppliers and probably some taxpayers too.

It literally is part of the lockdown - it's preventing people from leaving their houses to go to those businesses.

Why are Taiwan and south Korea fine then? They didn't lock down.

They got onto it very early. When they could still track all the contacts of people who turned up sick. I think they also got more co-operation from the people, in tracking. Finally, they had tests early: getting onto it early would have done them little good without tests.

Lockdowns happened because governments weren't prepared. If they were, there would have been no need to basically put everyone under house arrest.

It's partly good luck. Our cities are spread out: "urban sprawl" which governments have been trying to get rid of for ages. Both governments acted before the US government did. Also it's sunny and warm even in autumn (but look at South America before putting too much stock in that).

NOTE: May not apply to New Zealand so much. Not sunny and not warm.

But I think there's a lesson for everyone. Big cities need tighter restrictions than small ones. Out in the country, it might be enough to tell everyone to keep social distance.

We'll see if that works out. I don't mind the idea, but I would start more gradually and NOT the businesses where staff come into close contact with customers or customers spend significant time in the same room. No bars or restaurants unless they can serve customers literally outside.

Unemployment was extended during the Great Recession, it was up around a year iirc.
