I just wanna tell you all about what happened this morning, just to see how you're gonna react.

This guy told me he created two gofundme's for himself. One was to raise money for the YouTube channel and the other was literally so he could raise money to buy a Nintendo switch. That's right, he made two GoFundMes and the second was even worse than the first.

When I think GoFundMe, I think of a kid with cancer or a poor child in Afghanistan in need of a new home, not a YouTube channel or a video game system.

It's no wonder he wanted to co-opt my material. I specifically told him to make his own show and then this happens.

You're either contracted to work on a project or you have to sell the idea to the network or production company you're working with. TV channels and streaming services for example, people go to them and pitch their idea, and if those ideas are accepted than the creator of said idea/IP has to give it up to the network and basically have to let them do whatever they want with it. It's practices like this that are the reason why The Simpsons, Family Guy, SpongeBob, etc... have been allowed to go on so long despite the original creators leaving or dying, or why shows like, Teen Titans Go, Powerpuff Girls 2016, Thundercats Roar, etc... are allowed to exist without any input or signoff from the OG creators.

Point of order Matt Groening is still the Executive producer of the Simpsons as is Seth MacFarlane for Family Guy.

Stephen Hillenburg was the Executive producer of SpongeBob for most of its life so I really wouldn’t include it.

Thundercats Roar and Teen Titans Go deserve to be banned for being objectively garbage

Except imagine that your entire career as a photographer was controlled by these people. You aren't allowed to do anything else even on your own free time, or anything on the side.

That's probably how it is for most photographers. This is just a guess on my part, but I'd say that most people working professionally as photographers aren't creating photographic art according to the whims of their own creativity, but people who work for some company that tells them where to go and what to photograph and how to photograph it.

It's like in the music industry. Lupe Fiasco once had an issue with his record company sending songwriters to write his songs for him and wouldn't let him do anything else. His whole creative property was taken over by an industry. His rap career was no longer his.

Mhmm. And those songwriters as well. They don't get to write what they want, they write what the label tells them to write, just like Lupe gets told to record what the label wants him to record. It's alienation, workers generally have no say in what is done with their work.

The husband and I briefly considered starting a channel for funny commentary on video games, similar to MST3K but decided against it. We didn’t think it would be good for us, as a couple, to do this as as soon as you get followers (and I’ve seen this happen to several popular Youtubers I follow like Kate Flowers, It’s Black Friday, Rob Gavagan and the now defunct Cayleigh Elise- her channel is gone, I mean- to give a few examples) they start demanding access to parts of your life you don’t have to share, or make assumptions about you or think you owe them explanations for everything you do or don’t do in your channel. I understand their views is what gives revenues but I don’t think (and now I’m talking as a follower) a Youtuber is owned by their followers or owes them explanations for every single thing, particularly their private life.

I have a YouTube channel that I occasionally upload gameplay videos of things I find cool during some of my gaming sessions but I don’t do it very often and I only have a little under 200 subscribers, most of which I got because, years and years ago, I used to upload audio recordings of live metal performances of rarely played songs (Metallica, Megadeth, etc.). Even with that and any stuff I put up or livestream in the future I doubt I have to worry about it garnering enough attention to attract corporate meddling or people wanting to control my content, let alone it becoming a job in the first place.

Because very few people could run a billion dollar company. And even the highest paid CEO's get a very small portion of their companies revenue. Fun fact, if you divided the salary of Walmart's CEO between all of It's employees, they'd get a raise of less than 1$ an hour.

Well, capitalism doesn't actually care about who deserves what in terms of salary. It is purely what someone else is willing to pay you. And it usually just so happens that companies feel the need to pay CEOs a lot of money. And it takes a lot of expensive formal education in business to even qualify for a company board to maybe get to be a CEO if elected as the best person to be the leader for a big corporation.

It's quite easy, so let's take a prominent YouTuber, Mark Dice as an example. Whether or not you agree or disagree with him, as far as YouTuber's go, he's definitely prominent. He's got 1.54 million subscribers, and uses his channel to advertise books that he writes and publishes, which range from the trollish "Liberalism: Find a Cure" to the more serious "The True Story of Fake News" which documents how the mass media lies, and the rise of alternative media. He probably made half a mil on the Fake News book alone, which he wouldn't have been able to successfully promote without his YouTube channel. In that aspect, he's no different than an entrepreneur running his business. Whether or not you think YouTube's a job - it actually is a job.

And yes, most of us use it for entertainment. And most of us who ski, enjoy downhill skiing, but aren't doing it at a competitive level, so it's not our job, it's our hobby. Same goes for YouTube. For most of us it's a hobby; for some it's a job.

I stand corrected; I'll admit when I'm wrong. After reading a few recent posts, I no longer think that certain books written by Mark Dice are trollish; I think they're spot on.

Sure, if you're able to set your own salary, who wouldn't if that doesn't cause the company to collapse? Most people who're just an employee however, can't do that. Their pay is only as good as how much money they can earn for someone else.

Weird that so many people who aren't worth being paid much are currently considered essential workers, without whom we could not function, whereas the like of CEOs are told to just stay at home, their presence is more trouble than it's worth.
