I had been looking forward to the Biden dismissive 'this fucking guy' laugh at the debates, but this quiet voice weight of the situation Biden is so much better. Imagine how low the bar has gotten that simply acknowledging someone's suffering is such a stark contrast. In reality Biden is kind of doing the bare minimum, treating people's anger and anxiety seriously, and it feels like he's hitting it out of the park.

Biden is trucking in a gear the Trump mobile can't even imagine.

I guess the next step is for me to use the googlnator and see if that's really true or if it has been slowly making its way toward purple...

sigh...be right back I guess...

Yeah this happens literally every cycle since Obama’s first election. It’s way too early, and so much changes in September and October that it can be wild. In particular, October, the month before the election, is usually when long lost tapes of candidates doing weird shit magically surface

I wasn't talking about races tightening as they approach the actual election. That's just how things work and the October Surprise is not an Obama era invention. I was specifically talking about talks of Texas turning purple but then when the rubber hits the road they still go repubican by almost 10 points.

But there is less and less rubber on the GOP tires every cycle. Soon they gonna skid off the red side of the trail.

That's true, but if traditional Sunbelt strongholds like Texas and Georgia turn slightly more purple, the GOP will have to pour more money in those races to keep them. I'm also surprised states like Ohio are in Biden's favor currently.

We haven't had a president with any good personal vices in awhile. Trump is a teetotaler, Obama quit smoking before he was a president, and Bush was a boozehound but sobered up well before going into politics.

Which is why Texas isn’t becoming purple at least until 2024, maybe 2028 midterms. That’s assuming the new generation of Republicans, the Hawleys and Brauns don’t dramatically change the party to be friendlier to Hispanics

Yeah, but several presidents have been womanizers. I was referring more to drugs and alcohol.

If the story of 2016 was "Hillary matched Obama 2012 but Trump exceeded Romney 2012", then it seems like "Trump matched Trump 2016 but Biden exceeded Hillary 2016" is a winning strategy.

I mean honestly comparing Obama's address yesterday to Biden's speech from the day before, I think Joe Biden knocked it out of the park where Obama barely got a single.

I wouldn't say that, I think Obama has been strikingly poignant. But compared to the guy Biden is actually running against Biden hit a home run versus Trump showing up to the wrong stadium and falling over the turnstiles.

The gaffes will never leave Biden but he certainly isn't the so-called senile old man that some worried he'll continue to be. This calmer, compassionate grandpa demeanor is fitting him nicely. However, I do think Obama does better speaking wise. That said, I suspect we'll continue to see this Biden hopefully for the rest of the year, especially when he debates Trump.

To some Republicans facts do matter, but to the right wing echo chamber it will just be seen as 'evidence' that they were paid off by Soros/Gates in order to further the goal of having a future president Biden personally turn Trump gay via vaccination.

Oh in terms of oration you really can't beat Obama. I was referring more in terms of core message and the overall speech, not necessarily speaking ability, although naturally campaign speeches and Zoom call introductions can't really be directly compared.

Incumbent Baltimore Mayor Bernard Young has conceded defeat that he will not be remaining in office following this years election after early returns showed him only getting seven percent of the vote. Full results will not be known for several days and whomever wins the Democratic nomination will almost certainly be the next mayor. right now foamier mayor Shelia Dixon is in the lead with City Council President Brandon Scott a close second

In the 2012 debate Biden was helped by the fact that he was one of the most experienced politicians in America facing off against the politician equivalent of a TikTok zoomer. The "lean and laugh" moments only really were a thing because Paul Ryan would repeat a right-wing talking point as if it was legitimate insight and then Biden would respond with actual real-world knowledge of the subject.

We saw a lot of this in the Democratic primary debates too, especially whenever foreign policy was being discussed. Joe Biden has become an elder statesman at this point, with one of the longest careers in American politics of anyone still in the political fray. So when another candidate would try and add their hot take to the argument, Biden could step in and assert the authority that comes with direct knowledge & experience.

Now that could play out in a similar way in Trump–Biden debates. I think a key difference between Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden on this front is that while Hillary Clinton had the "right answers" but generally sounded insincere when expressing them, Joe is a lot better at adding the ethos and pathos to his logos.
In other words, "I was Barack Obama's vice president" + "I know most foreign leaders on a firstname basis" + "I've been fighting to help America since I was a young man despite having to overcome deep personal tragedy to do so" + "<solution to given problem>" is way, way more convincing than "I listened to America" + "<solution to given problem>".

The only legitimate line of attack against Joe Biden on that regard is that he's flip-flopped on a lot of issues. But that criticism doesn't hold up next to Donald Trump, whose entire career as president has been flip-flopping on almost every single one of his campaign promises.
