Theoretically she could run.

She would never win, and why would she want to anyways? She is a legislator, not a campaigner, she does her best work behind closed doors and in back rooms.

Not to mention, she is already Speaker of the House which, for Representatives, is kind of the pinnacle of ones career anyways.

Tell that to James Polk, Schuyler Colfax, and John Nance Garner.

Also James G. Blaine.

Garner and Colfax were just VPs; I would way rather be Speaker than Vice President.

Me too, but the House wouldn't want me to do it. I believe that the Speaker's job should be like that of Westminster Speakers, an impartial supervisor meant to make sure that all members can be heard. The majority party would still have a leader and whips, so why make the Speaker a partisan extension?

I agree, coming from a country with a Westminster system, the concept of a partisan Speaker has always made little sense to me.

Sure, but at least they didn't feel that being Speaker was the pinnacle of their career.

See also James G. Blaine, who was Speaker of the House for six years before successfully running for a seat in the Senate, which he resigned from five years later to serve as Secretary of State for less than a year. Then he ran for president, was nominated by his party but lost by fractions of a percent; four years later he returned for another stint as Secretary of State, this time lasting for 3 years.

For Blaine being Speaker of the House was basically the beginning of his career rather than the end.

The Speaker of the House isn't like the Speaker of a generic Robert's Rules assembly. They aren't tasked with running meetings; that job gets delegated to lesser members.

Actually, both the American system and the Westminster system have their merits under normal circumstances.
We just happen to be living in extraordinary times.
At least the Brits haven't ever elected Nigel Farage to... He's never actually served in Parliament, has he? I know he was in the European Parliament, but has he ever served in the House of Commons?

Are European Parliament elections high turnout elections? Do they occur at the same time as regular Parliamentary Elections?

No. And every time he stood for a Westminster seat the voters told him to fuck off.

Every 5 years, and a turnout of usually 45-50%.

They can happen at the same time as Parliamentary elections, but that's because a UK election can happen at any time if a PM desires.

45-50% isn't that far off from a typical U.S. election. '96 had a turnout of 49.0%, and we haven't had an election above 60% in a really long time (1968).

For comparison, the 2019 UK general election had a turnout of 67.3%. The last time the U.S. had an election above that threshold was 1900, long before women had the right to vote and when many African-Americans were still legally disenfranchised.

Pelosi may just be the one person who could make Republicans froth at the mouth even more than HRC. Of course, her childish behavior in response to Trump's childish behavior hasn't improved her standing in the GOP.

Because she doesn't want to be president.

I think it's more like she knows there are other Democrats that have better chances of winning, and she wants what's best for the party.

Not much would happen, anti-lockdown protests seem to be generally comprised of right wingers or privileged centrists at least and the police showed far more restraint.
