Well damn, that's some terrible luck right there. At least you get a sort-of-funny story out of it... albeit one which doesn't take long to tell.

Don't worry, I have contacted the people I won it off. They will now get me said gift card...in 3 months.

Well, at least Australian states tend to be pretty darn big. South Australia is significantly bigger than Texas, which is known for being massive, and SA isn't even the biggest state! You can drive from Adelaide to Oodnadatta (11-12 hours each way) and remain in the same state, so while this might sound rough, in practical terms it's not nearly as bad as what's happening in several countries and in a handful of states here where you aren't allowed to leave your house.

Well now everything is closed, and my incredibly high risk mother has started to take this seriously (ffs mother I was giving you bullshit science for a reason you know), and my dissertation has been 'indefinitely postponed,' and all exams cancelled...
I have had to develop a new hobby.

I have decided that a productive hobby to keep me occupied is buying shit off the internet. Many people I know have also decided that this hobby is for them, and have started groups where they can find deals on buying random shit off the internet. This is something you can do in self-isolation if you have someone in your house at least who can meet the delivery driver; it is available to young and old, and with people dropping prices in order to encourage people to buy more to keep their businesses going it is accessible to more people than ever before.

My house now has more craft beer than I would buy for an average Christmas period, more luxury handmade chocolates than we could eat if we don't want to end up egg-shaped etc. So there is a moral to this story: there's no point in panic buying when you can boredom buy instead.

You could try to collect something totally random, like pogs or something. I'm a fan of really bad movies myself, to the point where I intentionally purchased The Room and actually watched it.

I get all my movies for free in a way which really blurs the line between totally illegal and fair use (is taking the audio and audio description track of a movie and uploading it to a website which you have to be blind to use fair use? I don't know.)

What do you think A post- Covid-19 world would would look like? Do you think we'll return to the old normal? Or will there be a new normal? And if the later, what do you think that would like?

Well for starters, open borders just got completely debunked as an idea. This was like a giant vibe check for everyone who says things like "build bridges, not walls." Now, granted, I still think trump's border wall is dumb as hell, but this only made me more pro border control, and much more anti open borders. We gotta know who is entering our country, or this will happen.

Hobby Lobby CEO thinks God is telling him to stay open

An update from Hobby Lobby proves even more businesses need to be told when enough is enough.

My friend from Michael's Arts and Crafts finally is having managers contact some full time employees about using their back log of sick pay because the company has drastically reduced hours. No word yet about what they plan to do for part time employees or those who don't have sick/vacation pay. They have closed stores in New York per Governor Cuomo, so I believe they will be following only governor mandate.

There are 27,111 confirmed Coronavirus cases in America now. Of the cases that have resolved, 340 died and 176 recovered.

We have a problem if more people are currently dying in America from this than recovering. Those are not numbers we should see at all.

nah

if nothing else, illegal immigrants are more often in danger from their hosts when it comes to pandemics, not the other way around

you do need to know who's coming into or out of your country, but that's not necessarily inimical to the notion of open borders as a concept

Illegal immigrants aren't the problem because open borders wouldn't necessarily have illegal immigration issues. Open-borders allows for more persons to flow through barriers meant to be selectively permeable, for example, you wouldn't let someone you know to be sick or exhibiting symptoms of being intensely sick into your own home.

However, under an open border scheme, you don't exactly have the ability to keep them out, you just have to adjust for their presence and carry on. With the practice of increasing social distancing occurring, newcomers to communities will be viewed with higher suspicions as being potential entry vectors for the coronavirus. If that community already is fighting against a viral outbreak, they'll ostracize or even potentially antagonize immigrants regardless of status. The only exception to that would be family members and government personnel directly tasked with fighting an increase in crime or unrest in the populace due to the outbreak.

In any case, there is hope that there will be enough new White children being made to keep Europe and portions of the US majority White because so many couples are out of work and having to stay in the household with eachother. Because people are irresponsible or for whatever reason, a poorer economy is correlated with higher reproduction going on. The richer everyone is, the fewer kids people are inclined to have.

When wages are higher, taking time off of work is more expensive, and so therefore children have a higher opportunity cost. For obvious biological reasons the correlation is much, much stronger with women.

would i shun someone obviously sick from entering my own home? if i have the capacity to care for him, then i would let him in -- if not, direct him to the nearest hospital or some other suitable place

to leave one so struggling is abominable, if nothing else

same goes with diseased immigrants and countries, only in this case, the resources one can draw from are far, far greater

and one other thing: if immigrants come to a place already in the throes of an epidemic, shouldn't they be fearing the residents of that place? at worst, if they are themselves sick, they could be thought of as additional burdens to whatever healthcare the place has; otherwise, they'd be getting sick themselves in due course

It has been shown to be a viral prophylactic for a range of viruses.

The University of Minnesota is currently running a massive study on its effectiveness, which could give results in the next few weeks, and multiple other nations are doing the same as we speak. We will have a metric ton of data to look at very soon.

So, hopeful news that we can tamp this down sooner rather than later, even if it isn't guaranteed right now. The basic science of how it should work is there, we just don't know whether it will be effective in practice.

That does bring some hope and if it does work we can begin to reopen the world
