And again, so what? Which would you rather have, five million unemployed(which we can do something about) or five million dead(which we can't bring back)?

Unless I'm mistaken, the genetic analysises done of this virus seem to indicate so far that this was natural in origin and wasn't artificial in any way. This coronavirus has shown signs of having the natural world's various imperfections present in its code that wouldn't be present if it was created in a lab, like how an artificial diamond has fewer flaws than a natural stone because the environment its made in is more controlled than natural processes.

That doesn't mean that there weren't natural specimens being stored in the labs which were inadvertently released.

Because we can't do something now while the risk of contagion is still so high. Any jobs programmes would require people to be fairly close to each other, even for temporary make work infrastructure projects.

I don't think there's anyone who didn't see this result coming, it's just we're not willing to trade potentially hundreds of thousands, or at worst, millions of lives to stop it.

We can discover how unreal money is and they can create bizarre welfare programs and maybe even try and convince us that everyone should get a Universal Basic Income while they are not working to insure the system does not collapse.

No, we'll just have to keep the stimulus cheques flowing and expand social programmes like SNAP in the short term to ensure people can keep living. The short term in this case meaning 12-18 months though if we follow what some virologists have called for and impose a five-week national lockdown, we can still beat this thing up in time for summer to proceed somewhat as planned.

I don't think anyone was denying that, not to my knowledge. I'm well aware of the fact we could see at least 800,000 jobs lost for March; we had 70,000 jobless claims just this past week, the biggest jump in a while. I know several of my friends were told to fill out unemployment sheets so this is serious. Whether those jobs will remain temporary or more permanent, however, remains to be seen. For our sake, let's hope it's the former because it can be worst, and it's possible Jobless claims will spike to 3 million next week. Of course, if it's temporary, we're going to see some of the biggest growth in our history starting in the third quarter, that's if slowdown that was already occurring doesn't sink us further: oil is under $20 a barrel and corporate debt is at record highs.

Calm yourself. Actions are already underway. This is not the Great Depression and it is entirely recoverable. This is nothing but a setback and the worst is still yet far off. 5 Million out of work can easily be recovered by an economic stimulus package on the part of the government and where order breaks down, state and federal authorities can quickly act to stabilize.

There won't be some great revolution of workers, given that the majority of them would be on the chopping block for any truly 'liberated' lower classes. Most tend to forget that the majority of those serving in the military comes from families that have prior and/or active service members. Those families likewise come from either pro-government social groups or the Lower Class which is also tends to be pro-government (due in no small part to their high level of dependence on handouts).

I can't quite understand why lower oil prices are a bad thing? It will hurt the local oil industry, but it will help reduce transportation and logistics costs.Energy intensive industries will also benefit.

Well this is some good news. Apparently the vaccine being used in the recent trials, mRNA-1273, isnt made at all from the COVID-19 virus but is synthetic. The mRNA-1273 activates the cells to create a protein that tricks your body into thinking it’s infected, so that when you are actually infected by COIVD-19 you’re body can fight it.

What this all means is that if it’s approved, which probably won’t be until later this year or sometime in 2021, they can mass produce it at a higher rate than ever before

While I’m not a virologist…the main danger of COVID isn’t the virus itself, it’s all the bacteria that follow it.

Well, that's one danger, yes. The second is the risk of cytokine storms leading to almost inevitably fatal cytokine pnuemonia, but that's been fairly uncommon among younger folks, thankfully.

I don’t know if anyone has posted this article yet https://www.propublica.org/article/a-medical-worker-describes--terrifying-lung-failure-from-covid19-even-in-his-young-patients but it’s frightening reading. Such severe effects on such young people (possibly in such numbers as we are seeing from e.g. France) were not communicated at all by China - why?

Idk maybe it’s my anxiety finally getting to me after months but it does feel like very recent developments as the disease has reared in the West mean this is worse than we have anticipated... my mum is a frontline NHS nurse, almost sixty, lifetime smoker, I feel sick thinking about her going to work. It’s true that we generally are blind to things until the threat seems close to us but I’ve been interested in this pretty much since January, worried and certain it was coming since February, and it’s never seemed so bad before? Am I going crazy or smthn

Let me ask you a question:. What do you think will happen to American society if millions of people die, and millions more are hospitalized? Let's even assume that our medical system somehow, someway, doesn't collapse under that weight. You think the panic now is bad? It would several orders of magnitude worse under that scenario. The grinding of the American economy to a hault right now is, hopefully, temporary. That scenario wouldn't just grind the econom to a hault. It would destroy it.
