The most likely explanation at this point is a screwup at the lab 900 feet from the market that was working on the coronavirus. Considering unscrupulous individuals in these labs have been busted before across China selling animals used in experiments that should have been destroyed, it's not hard to imagine one or more of the coronavirus-infected bats used in experiments were passed on to the wet market and the rest is history. Hence the massive coverup and denials from the Chinese government.

I don't think it's a nefarious bioengineering cock up at all, I think it was mistake at one of the labs in the area involving legitimate research on this virus that escaped containment.

Speaking from the point of view of someone in a salaried job that is not going to be impacted by an epidemic/pandemic in the foreseeable future:

Coronavirus is a nice wake-up call to some of those whom were enjoying getting lots of cheap goods from China. Most of the sheep that make up society have long since grown fat and complacent, unwilling to truly face hardship or suffering. Those that now are discomforted by minor inconveniences have taken to bleating their discontent while others still try to understand if there is some danger about. Until we can build up domestic industry again in the United States, we're going to keep suffering from the decannual pestilence that leaks out of China.
