It was not, actually. Whilst scalping existed in Europe up until the High Medieval Period, it had disappeared by the time of European colonisation. There are pre-Columbian remains that have been found with evidence of having been scalped. It is one of those inventions that seems to pop up in other cultures across the globe independently.
