On the 17th of March, 2020 (17/03/20), founder of National Bolshevik Party and popular Russian political dissident Edward Limonov passed away after a long battle with cancer.
His death has come as a huge blow to all 38 Nazbols across the globe, including myself. At the ripe age of 77, it was too soon. A handgrenade among political party poppers, as the Moscow Times put it, his mourning will be tough, and moving on almost an impossibility.
Since 2001, Limonov had been making a name for his political activism and has taken strong stances against both domestic and foreign governments, including a stint in jail for charges the likes of "terrorism". Later, he would start the Strategy-31 civil protests to promote the right of peaceful assembly in Russia. In his last years of political activism, Limonov attempted to establish The Other Russia as the successor to the NazBol Party after it was banned, but as of yet, the party remains unregistered. Former Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Government, Boris Nemtsov, said The Other Russia "united national-bolsheviks, nationalists, liberals, social-democrats, and socialists", adding that "there are no parties similar to that one anywhere in the world".
In addition to being the CEO of Based Dept. Limonov was also an avid writer in his past time. Popular for his cynicism, Limonov has written a variety of books of both the political, sociological, and narrative kind. As a Frenchmen, my personal favourite is his collection of short stories in Napoleon's Cognac.
Personally, I will find it difficult to make it through the day knowing my Greatest Hero has fallen, but I always remind myself I have to be strong; it's what he would've wanted.
