Prior to Guandu he was Cao Cao's only real contender, and given they had very different positions on the future of the empire (Cao Cao had no remaining faith in the Han dynasty, long-term, and had a very different philosophy towards who to appoint in government) I find the idea of Yuan Shao defeating Cao Cao the biggest alternative history available in the era.
And separately, the whole Shakespearian-style tragedy of the Yuan family's decline due to pride, greed, paranoia and indecision is a thrilling story to me.
It does seem Shakespearean, yes. Or Jacobean, like John Webster's work. I'm not sure how an ascendant Yuan clan might have changed things. Would we have Yuan Wei instead of Cao Wei, and that kingdom subverted by the Simas? Or something else entirely different?
