Okay, the new batch of sauerkraut is in the jars and in the basement to ferment. I did one jar with caraway seeds.

The curing salt arrived today, so it's homemade corned beef tomorrow.

Oh, I'm sure there's a lot of smugness out there. I've been making sauerkrauts for years. The corned beef, not so much but I'm not wasting 12 pounds of beef.

Well, given Cao Cao became ultimately the driving force who decided the era and created the strongest of the Three Kingdoms, the fact that Yuan Shao was the only one of the preceding lineup of warlords to actually genuinely be a threat to him makes him rather interesting.

Plus I find something kind of endearingly tragic about his decline and fall from assertive and powerful leader of the coalition to indecisive and paranoid man easily humiliated by Cao Cao. When I do Three Kingdoms alt-history (Which is alarmingly often) more often than not my scenario is "Yuan Shao wins at Guandu".

If I had it, I'd so play Yuan Shao over and over. I'm particularly fond of him and "What if Yuan Shao won at Guandu" is my favorite hypothetical of the whole era.

So I started a game as Yuan Shao. First battle, the enemy general challenges him to a duel. It is long and drawn out but Yuan Shao wins. During the fight, the enemy says, "You fight like a dairy farmer!" and Yuan retorts, "How appropriate! You fight like a cow!"

Trying to build a coalition. It ain't easy.

Oh. Only NOW I noticed this one.

I'd imagine Yuan Shao'd be rather too insulted by the implication he fought like someone below his prestigious position to provide that particular retort...

Perhaps, perhaps. What's your fascination with Yuan Shao?

Prior to Guandu he was Cao Cao's only real contender, and given they had very different positions on the future of the empire (Cao Cao had no remaining faith in the Han dynasty, long-term, and had a very different philosophy towards who to appoint in government) I find the idea of Yuan Shao defeating Cao Cao the biggest alternative history available in the era.

And separately, the whole Shakespearian-style tragedy of the Yuan family's decline due to pride, greed, paranoia and indecision is a thrilling story to me.

I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t have a clue as to how a woman who has a still birth feels. Most not be great. But those Reborn Dolls some get are super creepy too. Either way, if it helps them cope somewhat with the loss... just, goodness.

Having emergency food stocks is just good policy, tbh. I just wish I'd included toilet paper in my own list of things to have a surplus of for in case of bad times. Live and learn, as they say though.

Never tried Sauerkraut myself, I imagine if done right it could be quite tasty.
