Masks are like circumcision. Yes, it offers some protection, but not as much as people think. And that false sense of security causes people to become lax with superior ways to defend oneself against disease.

I’m pretty sure they were referring to people who have literally no need to leave the house, I.e. non-essentials and people who aren’t going to the store.

why is WHO, CDC and many governments discouraging the use of face masks?

Several reasons:
1. Masks are a limited commodity and if everyone uses them there won't be enough for those that really need them.
2. They make people feel safe. And people who feel safe are more likely to go out of their home needlessly and get infected.

Facemasks won't protect you. They will protect other people from you. If you are already sick it is harder to spread the germs if you have a face mask. A lot of people are sick and they deny it, pretending that is ok, justifying the idea that they only have a cold or allergies.

Circumcision probably does protect against deadly diseases like HIV somewhat. Keyword being somewhat; it is not sufficient to allow you to sleep around without protection. Yet that is exactly what many people do because they believe circumcision protects them.

I am unsure if wearing a mask would also make people take more risk, like e.g. going outside without a reason in the midst of Corona, but I would not be surprised.

I came back to NS after everyone has realized how pants on head stupid the whole no masks thing has worked out.
