It is probably better to cause a shortage, for those who want to try to get rich quick.

Step 1: Spread a ton of fake news/fear that the virus is airborne and that you have what they need.
Step 2: Get these people to your place of sales. Have the inventory.
Step 3: Separate them from their money however you can. It doesn't matter if the mask is useless to them later on, provided you made the sale.
Step 4: Profits! If you collect enough money, you can take it and split town, living in the lap of luxury. So long as you're long gone, there will be no refunds.

Try to cause as much shortage as possible so that $1 item can be sold for $80 or more each. That'd really rake in the money, but only if there are enough bamboozled into buying. If it worked well, it could make Donald Trump proud.

This is called hoarding.

Hoarding is generally illegal in a lot of countries.

The difference between "stockpiling" and "hoarding", as far as I understand, is that the former takes place when supplies are plentiful and you aren't necessarily profiting from a shortage. The latter is, well, what you described in detail. Otherwise, me making tomato paste in the summer and filling about a dozen jars for the winter would also fall under hoarding, but it doesn't. Oh, by the way, if the masks are useless, I think that's also going to be fraud as well. Fraud is also a criminal activity.

A fellow did that in Turkey, became rather (in)famous, and fled to Paraguay or Uruguay or something, after defrauding thousands of people on what was essentially a massive Ponzi scheme. He now has an Interpol red notice on him: https://www.interpol.int/en/How-we-work ... 2018-22754

I think the distinction "when its plentiful" is a bit ill defined. To use the example provided, making tomato paste ... mmm, I'll admit I just want a jar of your tomato paste. It's not corruption, it's anti corruption in fact, I need to check the paste has been bottled in a hygienic and safe way. Mmmm.

They are wearing masks as part of a multi-layer protective system while following strict protocols around replacement frequency and disposal method. Some bod just wearing a mask with their jeans and t-shirt is not doing any of the rest of the things that make up some protection from infection. This is really not that complicated....

Of course they're not getting the same protection as a full-body disinfection uniform/partial hazmat suit, but it still rings as disingenuous to say that the masks are only for people who are already infected.

You know who bitches about hoarding? those who call people like me conspiracy nuts for stockpiling on rations, guns and ammunition. These people decided not to prep when they had the chance even before talk of an impending doom and now they can go fuck themselves for all I care.
What would things have been like if every security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive? Or if during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand? The Organs would quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt!

Oh for fucks sake... No it means they want to avoid passing anything they might have to people they are treating who are likely to have already compromised immune systems.

You know I'm not done yet. You come into the thread so haughty, judging the majority who "think its to protect them" then you break out the f word at the first mild criticism. You know I'm not done teasing you yet, right?

The people they're treating likely have already compromised immune systems. You mean they might have the flu, and the medical staff might have ... what?

Wouldn't it be quite unprofessional of the medical staff to stay on their job if they believe they have anything transmissible by breath?

So you think doctors and nurses have been wearing masks for decades because they believe they have coronavirus? Because that would be stupid.

No they wear masks because they understand that they come into contact with a lot of ill people, and there is a danger they expose people who are already ill to more infection. Medical staff are well aware they are constantly exposed to all manner of infections that may not have manifested yet, so they try not to be vectors of infection.

These masks are useless when it comes to protection. People 90% of the time wear it to prevent corona but it doesn't work or are actually sick. If you need real protection you need an actual respirator with the proper filter, not that you need it. Its not airborne.

Masks are like circumcision. Yes, it offers some protection, but not as much as people think. And that false sense of security causes people to become lax with superior ways to defend oneself against disease.
