Oregon Republicans Walk Out Again to Stop Climate Bill

Postby San Lumen » Tue Feb 25, 2020 10:07 am

https://www.oregonlive.com/news/2020/02 ... -bill.html

Once again Oregon Republicans have decided to grind state government to a halt by walking out of the state senate to stop passage of a climate bill. Without their presence their is no quorum and the legislature cannot operate. Governor Brown said "If (Senate Republicans) don’t like a bill, they need to show up and change it or show up and vote ‘no and are effectively taking a taxpayer funded vacation."

House Speaker Tina Kotek, also a Portland Democrat, called the walkout “a crisis for our democracy. This is not a game. Voters elected us to do our job. The members who refuse to show up and do their jobs are saying to a large majority of Oregonians: your vote doesn’t matter.”

Many important bills have yet to be brought up for a vote with just two week remaining in the session. Governor Brown has said she might call the legislature back for a special session in the late spring.

I agree with the sentiments of the Governor and House Speaker. Everyone in the legislature was elected to do a job and if you will not do that job then resign. Show up and debate the bill or simply vote no. Rendering government inoperable is a dereliction of their duty and a violation of their oath of office. The Republicans in the legislature represent only 36 percent of the population and are acting like spoiled children and they ought to be ashamed of themselves.

Your Thoughts NSG?

Isn't this illegal? Surely the police should just be following Oregon Republicans around at this point.

They are in violation of the state constitution. Governor Brown has said she is not at this time considering using the state police to locate them but is considering the possibility

Ok call up or send an email to your leaders of your state Republican party telling them to this. Why is rendering government inoperable a good thing?

Apparently their constituents want Florada to be underwater or something then.

Anyway, Oregon Republicans are dumbasses for doing this, we need to do everything we can to clean the climate. By we I mean everyone from every nation.

If Democrats gain two seats in the state senate this year they will be irrelevant

It's worth note there's a long and interesting history in the US about legislators fleeing their legislatures to avoid a vote.

We even have procedures for it, and hilarious results. Senator Bob Packwood famously was carried feet first into congress when he refused to come with capitol police after being ordered arrested by the senate and brought to the chamber.

If climate change starts to get worse enough as to be too obvious, (such as what appears to be happening now) people can't keep on with climate change denial without looking incompetent or stupid. Its in no one's best interest for the weather to be hotter/more extreme in more places. Past a certain point, even money can't keep propping up climate change denialism.

We have no choice but to start beating the fossil fuel interests at their own game. We along with the renewable energy interests have to out spend them in terms of lobbying and more. If it is too late before enough action is taken to address climate change, we can perhaps explore prosecuting the people who did the most to delay acceptance of climate change, amongst other measures.

By that logic if your in the minority why bother showing up to the legislature at all? You didnt win the most seats therefore punish everyone by not doing the job you were elected to do.

Well, it worked the first time. No easy way for it to not work a second time... either they get their way, or become martyrs.

They are not doing their jobs. why not just flat out refuse to show up for session at all? How would they become martyrs?

Here's a question for you.

If a senator doesn't come to the senate that day, because he's at a state agency reviewing their handling of the money that the senate and house have apportioned to them, to make sure that money is being used responsibly, is that not doing their job, or doing their job?

And why?

That is not the same thing. That is part of their responsibilities. Why he and not he or she?
