What is so hard to understand about someone saying something terrible, and really meaning it, but phrasing it as a joke?

Who says it'd be the South rising?

It’d be far too ironic if it was the North this time around.

The "North" doesn't exist as a cohesive cultural entity like it did in 1850. It's not the old Yankee stronghold it once was. It's more likely that the North goes up in flames in brutal fratricide as the Rust Belt, wealth liberals, and poor minorities duke it out with an unbelievable amount of hatred.

The South has much stronger internal stability and will probably be one of the safer places to be during societal collapse. Most of the fighting is going to take place in Northern cities and California.

The US definition of a liberal, or the rest-of-the-world term liberal?
Also, Adam Smith quote time!
In raising the price of commodities, the rise of wages operates in the same manner as simple interest does in the accumulation of debt. Our merchants and master manufacturers complain much of the bad effects of high wages in raising the price, and thereby lessening the sale of their goods, both at home and abroad. They say nothing concerning the bad effects of high profits; they are silent with regard to the pernicious effects of their own gains. They complain only of those of other people.

I don’t think you understand what I’m trying to say. I don’t doubt that some might express their beliefs through jokes. I doubt that even a significant minority of people using this meme take it seriously. I doubt that even a significant minority of people being exposed to this meme take it seriously. And I doubt that a hate group that has serious intent on starting a second civil war and has the means to do so are going to express that solely through memes.

Based on this thread, I don't think that people in general do accept that someone might express extreme beliefs through jokes.

People sometimes express violent extremist ideas in the form of jokes or memes to get them past the radar, in the hope that people with a dark sense of humour or who are just frustrated with "the system" will spread them about. And then from being spread they reach more people, a very small portion of which might actually agree with the message and get radicalised by it.

Panicking about it as if it's literally true doesn't make sense, people will laugh at the fact that you're taking a joke too seriously and that itself is another point on the stupid 4D culture war scoreboard where both sides act offended to try to get the other side to shut up while trying to wind up the other side with stupid inaccurate slurs and then claim they're "triggered".

Still, a meme spreading doesn't mean that there's an army of people ready to get up and do the thing, but it might mean you need to be extra vigilent for disturbed individuals doing violence inspired by it and imagining that their action will help inspire people to do the thing.

Well, they certainly can, but it's not like banning Pepe did anything to change anything. Arresting people from saying Boogaloo will, at the very most, stop some people from discussing a shitty sequel movie.

At the very most? No, banning the word Boogaloo, at most will in of itself start a Boogaloo. (People like the 1st amendment quite a bit)

I was thinking that too. Whenever the right-wing doesn't like something in American politics you can take a shot of scotch if "unconstitutional" or "civil war" are mentioned. Take a second shot of scotch if the people saying it identify as "Scotch-Irish".
