If I'm paying someone to perform the national anthem then they better perform it properly or they won't get my business again.

If you're being asked by your country to perform it, then you should take it seriously.

It’s tricky with anthems and the reaction you’ll get to this will depend greatly on the individual. Some people expect a national anthem to be interpreted a certain way, showing a certain attitude or reverence. Others won’t care how much poetic license the interpreter takes.

When Fergie, formerly from the Black Eyed Peas, sang the US national anthem for the opening of a basketball game, her way of singing caused outrage in some, mirth in others. I thought it was so cringy and jazzy that it was hilarious. I’m sure, though, that some liked it too.

The only proper way.

I haven't seen the performance and don't wish to, but I think national anthems should be sung with respect and decorum.

What am I a fascist? NO. It's just that there's a captive audience who've got to stand through the damn thing, it shouldn't be awful.

It's the national anthem, so as long as she doesn't change it too much it'll be fine by me.

Ban all national anthems!

I was eating when reading this and almost choked on my food, lol.

But I guess this whole ordeal could be a good issue material, right?

Nation Anthems, pledges of allegiance and the like are a bit on-the-nose to me outside of actual national events.

There's a thundering load of issues, "abolish national anthems" would be an option in one of them Im sure.

That answer seems like it would push towards freedom of speech but cost national pride. What would the other options be?

  • New national anthem everyone can sing (based on a nursery rhyme)
  • Designated singer (so it's always sung right)
  • Recordings only, no live performances
  • Instrumental anthem (no singing)

I'd love to hear the Yanks sing their anthem like this during their handegg championship match: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93F-APVFB1E

I'm convinced that if you pull a random tone-deaf person out of the crowd and ask them to sing the national anthem, their performance would still be more in the "spirit" of the anthem than 99% of professional singers.

Some songs are probably not meant for embellishments or artistic license. National anthems probably fit that.
