to be fair it's more like they want to be Perceived As Lazy vs Perceived As Stupid

in reality, they may prefer to be one or the other

you know what I mean?

the distinction

True, as long as you don't believe you're stupid, you're not really stupid, and that's due to perception.

Option 1. I'd like to think I'm fairly smart, and if I'm being completely honest, I don't have much else going for me. So I'd much rather be considered a slacker than an idiot.

Hey, we don't like it either. Something about the bar exam breaks your ability to properly interact with normal people.

As a slacker, you can't do much, though.

You can't do much if people think you're an imbecile either. It reflects on their actions towards you just as much (if not more) as being viewed as being lazy.

This thread is about perceptions of others though, not about actually being lazy or stupid.

What I meant was that "ignorance is bliss" type of things are about how things actually are, not about how they seem. For example, if you actually are dumb as a doornail then you might not even realise how people view you. I.e. you're blissfully ignorant. If you actually aren't that stupid though, you'll definitely notice if people think you are.

I'm surprised that people aren't voting for option 2. It's not their character being attacked in that case, even if it's not really true about them.

I think it's just pride.

They'd rather be seen as immoral (but smart) then stupid (but "moral")?

You expected the other set of results?

I expected people would want their effort to be acknowledged. Intelligence isn't everything in the world, and your actual character should be considered much more important. I thought more people would agree with that.

maybe for some people, "laziness" is not seen as a character failing or a sin, just a state of being (ex "who likes to do work? It's only natural")

not everyone is from a tradition where Sloth is seen as one of the deadliest sins; its an inconvenient trait in the workplace but for some and their compass... it's not on the same level of moral condemnation (if any) as being say, a greedy back-stabbing employee

some people do not draw the connection between morality and work ethic, it's seen to operate on another axis
