Heh, that’s not so different from how things happen here in that regard. It’s rarely what you know but who you know.

Thanks for taking the time to answer.

Racism is also bad. Lots of Sinophobia springing up due to the outbreak. There's a sizable Chinese enclave near where I work and everybody just avoids them entirely. Seen groups of people cross the street when they see Chinese people walking towards them and stuff. Real bad, and it's not like this just sprang out of nowhere. Filipinos be pretty racist.

positives: the food is good

negatives: anthony bourdain is fucking dead, way too many authoritarianisms for too fucking long, what democratic leaders come along are pathetic, corrupt, not popular enough, or not alive, asean not being the eu (may still be a good thing, because fuck those fucking fucked-up authoritarians), a LOT of economic potential wasted due to lack of economic integration and of course those fucking shitfaced authoritarian cuntfucks, sinophobia, political apathy, vast gulfs of inequality, oh, and China

I honestly thought up till this point that filipinos were as crazily positive about far east Asians as they were about europeans, but i guess only Caucasians are given a definite place of privilege in that society

People really need to stop linking Chinese to coronavirus. This happens in America too and honestly it's stupid. Not all Chinese people are sick. Especially Chinese people who were born here and never visited China

East Malaysia, where I live, has no cases of the Wuhan coronavirus so far. It's West Malaysia across the sea that's bearing the brunt of cases. 22 so far. For once, I'm actually grateful to be living in a more sparsely populated, backwater part of the country. No such luck for my relative in Hong Kong though. Southeast Asia being hot and humid all year round should help to mitigate the spread of the virus. Borneo is in the middle of the wet season, so the rain and moisture should really prevent any virus-laced droplets from traveling more than a certain distance.

I wonder who the other Malaysian who answered the poll is. Guess I'm not the only Malaysian on this forum after all?

Apparently we can't really talk about Corona-chan because there's another thread dedicated to it lol. But let's be frank, the CoV-19's been pretty much on the minds of many now.
On other topics, what got you attracted to NationStates though?

The growing pains of a newly elected Malaysian government two years ago led me to wonder what the perfect country would look like compared to Malaysia. I wondered whether such a hypothetical country ought to be a nation-state for a particular ethnic or religious group and what the term nation-state actually means. I googled "nation-state" and discovered this site by accident. The rest is history.

I wanted to do online roleplaying and Nationstates delivered. Turns out I have a passion for worldbuilding and love running the same expy-Japan year after year. The project has evolved dramatically from its roots and I'm pretty proud of it (to the point of listing that 2-day 27k-word writing binge as an achievement for applications at times). Not many Singaporeans are interested in the combination of things that would hook one to Nationstates, as far as I'm aware.

Fellow ASEANites, what would be a good place in the region to go for a one-week holiday around December this year? I can't afford the Annual Japan Pilgrimage this year due to some life issues (and Tokyo 2020) so perhaps I'll go someplace in the region other than Johor Bahru for once. If the present situation's over by then, of course.

What's it like living in southeast Asia with all the cultural diversity and different languages being spoken in the same country?

Pretty much everyone is trilingual in Indonesia, able to speak Indonesian, English, and their respective regional language. So it's not really a problem.

In Malaysia, Malays tend to speak Malay, which is basically the same as Indonesian. The Malay dialects spoken in Sarawak, Sabah and Kelantan are vastly different from the standard Malay spoken along the west coast of Malaya. I wonder if standard Malay as spoken in Malaysia sounds "posher" and more "correct" than the Javanese-accented Malay spoken in Indonesia, because Malay is actually spoken natively by the Malays, whereas most Indonesians speak their own separate regional languages and learn Malay as a second language? Does Indonesian sound more "pidgin", similar to how Indian English sounds to Britons and Americans? Our version of Malay is more strongly influenced by British English than Dutch, and we even used to have our own separate spelling systems until Malaysia and Indonesia agreed to adopt a new spelling system to be used jointly by the two countries as well as Singapore and Brunei. Even then, minor spelling differences (e.g. minit/menit, mahu/mau) and significant differences in vocabulary (e.g. polis/polisi, bas/bus) persist.

Malaysian Chinese speak Mandarin (sometimes as a second language) and/or their ancestral southern Chinese dialect, most commonly Hokkien and Cantonese, but also including Teochew, Hakka, Foochow, Henghua and Hainanese. Malaysian Indians generally speak Tamil, although other Indian languages such as Gujarati, Punjabi and Hindi are not unheard of. Dayaks in Sarawak tend to speak mainly Iban. Other Sarawakian languages include Melanau, Bidayuh, and a couple of other languages. In Sabah, the indigenous Kadazandusuns mostly speak some form of Kadazandusun language, if it's even a single language to begin with. All of the indigenous Sarawakian and Sabahan languages are closely related to Malay.

Most Malaysians of all races speak English to varying degrees, most commonly as a second language, and this often blends into the local pidgin dialect known as Manglish, which is an offshoot of Singlish and Singaporean English and sounds virtually identical, the only difference being that Manglish uses a larger number of Malay loanwords whereas Singlish tends to favor Chinese loanwords. I honestly can't tell the difference between a Malaysian and Singaporean accent. Most Malaysians are multilingual and routinely blend words from multiple languages into a single sentence.

The usual rules don't apply to me as I grew up in Hong Kong and attended English-medium international schools, making me virtually monolingual in English to my own detriment. On the flip side, I've never had to suffer the running joke that is the Malaysian education system.

Filipino here.

All I can say is that I'm fed up with all the shit happening here, and if an opportunity presents itself that will allow myself and my family to leave for somewhere better, I'll gladly take it in a heartbeat.

Only thing I'll miss here is the food and the few friendships I've made over the years (but then again, all of my friends have plans to leave too).

Same here. Malaysia's a fucking joke compared to Britain or Japan. I've always wanted to move to Vancouver or something. I wouldn't want to settle down and raise kids in Malaysia given how subpar Malaysia's education system is. I don't think I would really miss too much because I'm originally from Hong Kong and only repatriated to Malaysia as an adult. The few friends, classmates and acquaintances I do know are scattered all over the world. It's mostly just relatives who are based in Malaysia.

No. The arekan language is just for plebeians :p

Jk. It's easier to learn than the sophisticated, court-refined Yogya and Surakarta dialects, eventhough it's also more....colourful.

Also, Indonesian. Born and raised there, from East Java.
